This temple is said to have been founded by Gyoki at the request of Emperor Shomu in 741 (Tenpyo 13) (^^) The area is designated as a special national historic site, and the foundation stones of the seven-story pagoda and main hall remain on the way from the Niomon Gate to the main hall (Important Cultural Property) (^^) You should also see the remains of the Sanuki Kokubunji Temple ruins and the restored houses behind the temple (^^)
