When you come to Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, you must not miss the sunset at Takamatsu Port! Known as the "Maritime Gateway of Shikoku," it is not only the starting point for shipping to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea but also a romantic spot to enjoy breathtaking sunsets.
📍 Best Viewing Spot: Takamatsu Symbol Tower (Photo 10)
We recommend visiting the Symbol Tower next to Takamatsu Station. It’s only a 3-minute walk from Takamatsu Station, and you can take the elevator directly to the 29th-30th floors. The observation deck here is free and open from 10:00 to 22:30, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Takamatsu Port and the cityscape. There are also two restaurants where you can dine. At sunset, from here you can gaze upon the Seto Inland Sea, the calm sea surface, ever-changing clouds, gentle orange sunlight, and the islands at sea, all forming beautiful pictures.
🌊 Sunset Moment
As the sun slowly sinks below the horizon, the entire port is dyed golden, and the sea sparkles. The sunset at Takamatsu Port is called the "Orange Sunset," with the sky gradually shifting from deep blue to a gentle orange-pink, extremely romantic. Next to the port is the world’s earliest all-glass lighthouse, the "Red Lighthouse," which glows bright red at night. It has been selected as one of "Japan’s Top 100 Lover’s Sanctuaries," making it even more romantic under the afterglow of the sunset.
📸 Photo Tips
• The observation deck of Symbol Tower offers panoramic shots of the city and ocean, especially stunning at sunset.
• The "Red Lighthouse" is an excellent photo backdrop, particularly at sunset when the red light complements the evening glow.
• It’s recommended to use a telephoto lens to capture the interaction between the ship silhouettes and the sunset. Don’t miss the blue hour after sunset either.
✨ Experience
Sitting by the port, feeling the gentle sea breeze, watching the sunset slowly disappear between sea and sky, brings a special tranquility to the heart. The day’s fatigue seems soothed by this gentle sunset. The sunset at Takamatsu Port has a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere, unlike other crowded popular spots.
📌 Practical Information
• Transportation: It’s about a 10-minute walk from JR Takamatsu Station to Takamatsu Port. The Symbol Tower is right next to Takamatsu Station.
• Timing: It’s recommended to check the sunset time for the day and arrive at the Symbol Tower or port 30 minutes early.
• Nearby: Near Takamatsu Port, there is Tamamo Park (famous for the Takamatsu Castle ruins) and Ritsurin Garden (a Michelin three-star garden), which you can visit during the day and then watch the sunset in the evening.
The sunset at Takamatsu Port is a romance woven from nature and culture. If you also love seaside dusk, this place is definitely worth a quiet visit!
