Gifu & Takayama Old Streets: Little Kyoto of Hida

Since ancient times, Takayama City in the Hida region of northern Gifu Prefecture has been an economic hub for the Japanese government. Nicknamed 'Little Kyoto of Hida,' Takayama's old streets were developed 400 years ago by Kanamori Nagachika, a famous general under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who modeled the castle town after Kyoto. Kanamori Nagachika, a tea ceremony enthusiast, studied under tea masters like Sen no Rikyū and Furuta Oribe.
