Regarding diving certifications, there are mainly two types: basic OW and advanced AOW. The basic course usually takes 2.5 days (half a day of which is for theory + equipment assembly). AOW takes 2 days. In many places, deep diving, night diving, and wreck diving (such as Sipadan in Semporna) require AOW certification to participate.
Most resorts have PADI-certified dive centers that offer different diving packages, such as: 4-day, 3-night OW packages, 3-day, 2-night AOW packages, 6-day, 5-night OW + AOW packages, and 7-day, 6-night OW + AOW + Sipadan packages. If you don't pass the OW, the AOW certification fee will be refunded, but of course the accommodation fee cannot be refunded.
Prices also vary greatly depending on the scenery and water quality of the island, as well as the scenery of the accommodation. Among the three resorts (White Pearl, Borneo, and Singamata), we chose White Pearl, which has the best water quality and scenery (we passed by Singamata on the way back, and there was indeed a lot of garbage and floating debris on the water...).
