Discover the Silk Road Heritage Among Ancient Tiles in Tianshui's Old City

I visited Tianshui Ancient Town (天水古镇) again in the early afternoon to kill some time before catching a train, and the summer sun was relentless — the stone streets were almost shimmering with heat. Still, wandering through its centuries-old lanes lined with traditional buildings was worth every drop of sweat.
Shops selling handmade crafts and local snacks offered brief pockets of shade, and the fragrance of herbal tea wafting from a teahouse was too tempting to resist. Inside, the cool interior felt like a time capsule, with carved wooden beams and bamboo blinds filtering the harsh sunlight outside.
The heat gave the town a slower rhythm — locals sat under archways fanning themselves, while the red lanterns along the eaves swayed lazily in the breeze. If you visit in the afternoon, bring a hat, sunglasses, and lots of water, and take your time moving between shaded spots.
💡 Tips for Hot-Weather Visits:
• Stick to the narrow alleys where buildings block the sun.
• Pop into teahouses or craft shops to cool down.
• If possible, time your stay so you can watch the town transform as the cooler evening air sets in.
