An early-flowering variety of cherry blossoms was in bloom at Tokyo's Ueno Park on Thursday, March 13, drawing crowds of delighted spectators.

Many locals and tourists posed for photographs under the trees covered in pink and white flowers.

The cherry blossom season was set to kick off next Friday, March 21 in Tokyo, local media quoted private weather company Weathernews as reporting last week.

Warm weather in late March is also expected to accelerate blooming activity across Japan.
