A Cute Shrine Full of Maneki-neko in Tokyo — Gotokuji Temple

📍 Location
Gotokuji Temple
Address: 2-24-7 Gotokuji, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo
Features: Famous for the countless Maneki-neko statues scattered inside and outside the temple, commonly known as the "Cat Temple." It is an ancient temple of the Sōtō Zen sect and is said to be the birthplace of the Maneki-neko. The temple also houses the graves of the Ii family ancestors, including Ii Naosuke from the Edo period.

🚃 Transportation (from Sangenjaya)
1. Take the Tokyu Setagaya Line local train from Sangenjaya Station for 7 stops, about 12 minutes, fare 160 yen.
2. Get off at **Yamashita Station**, then walk about 6 minutes (approximately 550 meters) to reach Gotokuji Temple.

Tip: The Setagaya Line trains have only two cars and limited space, so it’s recommended to avoid peak hours. On the way from Yamashita Station to the temple gate, you’ll pass several handmade Maneki-neko shops—don’t forget to take your time browsing.

📝 Personal Impressions
Walking up the bluestone steps into the temple, I was first surrounded by thousands of "Maneki-neko" — big ones, small ones, wooden, ceramic, each seeming to wave at you. The temple grounds are lush with trees, and the three-story pagoda stands quietly, creating a serene and profound atmosphere.

I took a moment to sit on a stone bench in front of the "Happiness Hall," watching worshippers hold ema plaques, making wishes to the cat deity; then I enjoyed a bowl of rich matcha at the teahouse, listening to the wind rustling through the treetops, feeling unexpectedly relaxed. Don’t miss picking out a Maneki-neko at the souvenir shop to take home—it's said that placing one on your desk or near your wallet can bring good luck.

As I left, the sunset quietly dyed the temple gate red, and the shadows of the Maneki-neko stretched along the stone steps, as if they were giving one last "wave" to send you off, still blessing your future journey. From the cozy coffee aroma in the alleys of Sangenjaya to this tranquil Buddhist temple, it’s a perfect blend of urban liveliness and rural Zen, making it an ideal day trip on the outskirts of Tokyo.
