【Tokyo】Let's take a historical walking tour

When you think of Tokyo, you probably picture bustling areas like Shibuya and Shinjuku or places like Asakusa, but there are also stylish hidden spots where you can enjoy history! This time, I’m introducing the Shibamata area. It’s a town known as the setting for the movie "Otoko wa Tsurai yo." It was quite stylish, so here’s a weekend plan to spend time in Shibamata!

① Shibamata Haikara Yokocho (1st photo)
A toy museum with a retro atmosphere located about a 1-minute walk from Shibamata Station. Although it’s called a toy museum, it mostly feels like a traditional candy shop 🍪🍭. There are lots of nostalgic snacks, and you end up buying a lot without meaning to... The building’s atmosphere is Showa-era style with unique decorations, making it retro and stylish!!

② Taishakuten Sando (2nd photo)
A shopping street that makes you feel like you’ve slipped back to the Showa era. There are many eateries and souvenir shops lined up, so you can enjoy eating while walking! There were so many interesting shops that everyone kept stopping after walking a little, laughing. The stylish atmosphere makes it a must-visit spot for photography lovers!

③ Shibamata Taishakuten and Suikeien Garden (3rd to 6th photos)
A Nichiren Buddhist temple famous for a 500-year-old pine tree on its grounds. The highlight was especially Suikeien Garden, a place where you can appreciate the beauty of a Japanese garden. You can enjoy the garden while walking along the covered corridor! You can visit the garden and the sculpture gallery for 400 yen.

There are benches where you can sit and admire the garden, which was very lovely. Surprisingly, there weren’t many people, so you can spend a peaceful moment 🤍. There were turtles in the pond and a monkey statue in the garden, making the bridge quite interesting if you look closely!

④ Yamamoto-tei (7th to 9th photos)
Located behind Shibamata Taishakuten, about a 5-minute walk away, Yamamoto-tei is a stylish tea house that used to be a residence. The highlight here is also the beautiful, spacious Japanese garden! You can visit for 100 yen. The main room where you can slowly enjoy tea has large windows, allowing you to relax while looking out at the garden. I hope you spend a beautiful time that makes you forget the passage of time!!

Shibamata is a place where you can thoroughly enjoy history and Japanese atmosphere. Please visit next weekend!
