When you think of Tokyo, you probably picture places like Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Asakusa, but Suginami Ward also has wonderful temples and shrines where you can spend a leisurely time. It’s also famous as a very livable area. Here are some recommended temples and shrines in this charming neighborhood!!
① Mabashi Inari Shrine (Photos 1–5)
A shrine located in a residential area just off the Asagaya shopping street ⛩️
It’s about a 10-minute walk from Asagaya Station.
This historic shrine was built during the Kamakura period.
The highlight is the dragon torii gate.
A rising dragon is carved on the left, and a descending dragon on the right, creating a very cool appearance.
It is said that touching these dragons will bring good luck 🐉
There are three torii gates and a Zuishinmon gate leading up to the main shrine.
The Zuishinmon gate has a large lucky bell 🛎️ that can only be rung on January 4th!
At the main shrine, there are rows of wish-fulfilling foxes.
You can write your wish on a paper, place it inside, and offer the wish-fulfilling fox 🦊
② Omiya Hachimangu Shrine (Photos 6–8)
A shrine about a 10-minute walk from Nishi-Eifuku Station on the Keio Inokashira Line ⛩️
The grounds are quite spacious, and the shrine has a long history of about 1,000 years.
Because it’s located in the center of Tokyo, it’s called the “navel of Tokyo” 😉
It’s famous for warding off evil and prayers for safe childbirth.
There’s also a park nearby, making it a perfect weekend walking spot!
③ Asagaya Shinmeigu Shrine (Photos 9–10)
A shrine recently popular with Chinese tourists.
It’s about a 5-minute walk north from Asagaya Station.
The atmosphere is calm, and many couples hold their weddings here.
A special recommendation is the “Kamimusubi” bracelets made of lace.
They are delicately crafted, look adorable, and come in many varieties, so it’s hard to choose which one to get 🤍
I bought a Kamimusubi featuring charms of Tsukuyomi, the full moon and crescent moon 🌙
Be sure to get matching ones with someone special!
Please visit the peaceful Suginami Ward and enjoy your time here~
