Tokyo Onsen Guide|A Day Trip to Sadako's Hometown — Beauty Hot Springs

Hot Springs
Although the classic horror character Sadako’s hometown is Oshima, this weekend’s exploration of Izu Atagawa turned out to be full of unexpected delights! After checking out from Inatori, I used a five-hour window to head straight to Atagawa, which conveniently lies along the route back to Tokyo. Just two train stops away, a few minutes’ walk from the station, I encountered steaming hot spring footbaths. While soaking my feet, I also got to try making onsen tamago (hot spring eggs) myself—placing eggs in a special net bag, immersing them in the hot spring, and waiting for about ten minutes. After peeling, the yolk was creamy and runny, and the white was soft and sweet, becoming the first delightful surprise of the trip.

Strolling along the winding river, the originally gloomy sky gradually cleared. Sunshine poured over the sea, and the sparkling blue ocean view was irresistible to capture with my camera. There was also a footbath area by the seaside, where I soaked my feet to relieve fatigue while enjoying the vast ocean view—pure bliss. On the way back, I even encountered a few lazy stray cats, whose affectionate rubbing against my legs instantly melted my heart.

What impressed me most about Atagawa were the giant hot spring wells visible everywhere by the roadside. Steam billowed up, and combined with the rustic surrounding buildings, it evoked a somewhat eerie and mysterious atmosphere reminiscent of the Sadako movies. Imagining the nightfall, with red lanterns lighting up one after another, the warm light mingling with the mist would surely add a magical touch. Unfortunately, the trip was rushed, so I couldn’t wait for the night view, but the daytime experience alone made me fall in love with this small town.

Compared to the slightly desolate Inatori, where insects are abundant by the sea, Atagawa offers not only a richer hot spring experience but also more vibrant natural scenery and cultural atmosphere. Whether you want to relax your body and mind or seek a unique travel experience, this place is definitely worth adding to your must-visit list for trips around Tokyo!
