Meiji Jingu Shrine is one of Tokyo’s most famous and frequently visited landmarks, and it’s easy to see why. Nestled within a lush forest in the heart of the city, the shrine offers a peaceful escape from the urban rush—at least in theory.
We drove to the area and parked at a nearby shopping mall. The approach to the shrine was long but calming, with tall torii gates, wide gravel paths, and dense greenery that instantly made us feel like we had stepped into another world. The natural environment surrounding the shrine creates a soothing, almost meditative atmosphere.
However, due to its popularity, the grounds were extremely crowded during our visit—a reminder of its status as a top tourist attraction. The tranquility was somewhat diminished by the large crowds, especially near the main hall.
That said, the walk itself was still enjoyable, and the sheer scale and beauty of the shrine grounds remain impressive. For those interested in Japanese culture, history, or photography, Meiji Jingu remains a must-visit—just be prepared for the crowds.

Final Verdict
A beautiful, forested walk to one of Tokyo’s most iconic shrines—worth a visit, but go early to avoid the crowds.
