Luigi Ghirri, to me, is not just a representative contemporary Italian photographer, but the person behind the cover photos of my beloved complete works of Atsuko Suga.
・
This is the first retrospective exhibition in Asia, featuring about 130 works ranging from his early pieces taken while he was a surveyor to his later photos of Aldo Rossi and Morandi’s studios. Although it just started, it was already crowded.
・
The highlight is the photos of Morandi’s studio. No matter how many times I see them, they are wonderful. When you look at how he captures light, color, and space, you can feel Ghirri’s gaze, similar to Morandi’s brushwork, which really moves me. These are definitely my favorite photos.
・
Near the beginning of the exhibition, there was a series of photos taken from behind people photographing landscapes or admiring artworks. Imagining the composition from the perspective of the viewer made it very interesting. I was captivated by the space of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, where you can catch glimpses of people appreciating Luigi’s photos, and I found myself wanting to photograph the viewers more than the works.
・
I thought I was interested because I like Suga and Morandi, but after seeing this exhibition, I am certain that I would have become a fan of this photographer even without them.
