Hefei Zimuyuan Museum is located on the edge of Hefei Science Island, covering an area of about 35 acres. It has a large collection of classical furniture, wood carvings, stone carvings, porcelain, bronzes, coins, stamps, etc. It also reconstructs southern Anhui folk houses, ancient pavilions, archways and other landscapes. The museum is positioned as a collection, display, research and exchange.
In recent years, private museums have flourished in Anhui Province. Currently, there are 30 private museums across 12 cities, including Hefei, and 18 counties and districts. These personalized private museums, rich in regional characteristics and rich in historical and cultural heritage, have become a new highlight in the development of Anhui's museum sector.
According to statistics from the Provincial Department of Culture, the earliest museum to be established was the China Shoe Museum in Sixian County, Suzhou City, founded in 1990. It houses over 3,000 exhibits on shoe culture from ancient and modern times. Larger museums include the Wancuilou Museum in Huangshan City, the Wanjiang Cultural Park in Anqing City, the Xiushanmen Museum in Chizhou City, the Huizhou Architecture Art Museum in Wuhu City, and the Zimuyuan Museum in Hefei City. The first private museum approved by the provincial government was the Anhui Yuanquan Hui Culture and Folk Museum. In June 2003, it received approval from the Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, becoming one of the first government-approved private museums in the country. Huangshan City leads the province in terms of the number of private museums, collections, and influence. With 12 private museums covering a wide range of subjects, including historical figures, folk culture, and folk crafts, they serve as a valuable complement to state-owned museums.
