Tokyo | Experience the Streets of Edo's Fukagawa from 1840 at a Museum That Feels Like a Film Set

If you enjoyed Osaka's Museum of Housing and Living, Tokyo offers a similar experience at the "Fukagawa Edo Museum." This museum features a high-ceilinged space spanning two floors, recreating the streets of Edo's Fukagawa district as they appeared in the 1840s.

Here, you'll find a variety of establishments, including a boat rental house, a rice shop, a tempura noodle stand, a sushi shop, and a tea house. Staff members are on hand to explain the lifestyle of the era. Visitors can even step inside these life-sized replicas, after removing their shoes, to admire the intricate interior designs and details.

Much like a period drama film set, the museum uses lighting, sound effects, and flashes to simulate day, night, and heavy rain. The transitions are fast-forwarded, so as you explore, the sudden shifts between light and dark might leave you feeling a bit disoriented.

According to the staff, the museum also hosts a monthly kimono rental event, allowing visitors to dress up and feel as though they've traveled back in time to the Edo period.
