Toyokawa Inari and Hie Shrine in Tokyo showcase two sides of Tokyo's religious culture.
Though based on Kyoto's Fushimi Inari, Toyokawa Inari is an independent temple (Myogon-ji Temple) renowned for its deity, Tashini Shinten (Inari God). Its most notable feature is its protection of business and good fortune. The grounds are dotted with bright red fox statues, the Inari messengers, creating a mysterious and powerful atmosphere, making it a center of worship for businesspeople.
Hie Shrine, steeped in history, is revered as Tokyo's guardian deity. Nestled on a hill, the shrine features a long staircase leading up through a massive torii gate, creating a tranquil and sacred setting. The shrine's main deity, the Oyama God, protects the city's peace and prosperity. The grand "Sanno Matsuri" held each June is one of Japan's three major festivals and boasts a magnificent spectacle.
One prays for business prosperity, the other protects the capital's safety. Both are essential spiritual landmarks in Tokyo.
