Ueno Park, located in Tokyo's Taito Ward, is Japan's oldest urban park. Opened in 1873, it was bestowed upon the city of Tokyo by Emperor Taisho in 1924, marking its historic founding. The park is centered around Shinobazu Pond and is known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, with 1,300 Somei Yoshino cherry trees in full bloom in spring. In summer, the pond is blanketed in a sea of lotus flowers.
As a treasure trove of cultural assets, the park is home to the Tokyo National Museum (National Treasure "Ebuddha" and samurai swords), the National Museum of Western Art (Rodin's "The Thinker"), and Ueno Toshogu Shrine (its gilded Karamon gate). Pandas and koalas are popular at Ueno Zoo. You can even play with swans on a rowboat at Shinobazu Pond.
At Ami Yokocho, enjoy street food like takoyaki and eel rice (Izuei), admire the autumn foliage, and enjoy quiet strolls in winter. Directly connected to JR Ueno Station, it is easily accessible and continues to be loved as an "urban oasis" in Tokyo.
