Welcome to the ends of the earth: Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a raw, untamed wilderness of jagged granite peaks, colossal glaciers, and piercing turquoise lakes. It is globally famous for the epic W Trek and O Circuit hikes, which attract adventurers from every corner of the world. Beyond the trails, the park is a haven for unique wildlife, including guanacos, Andean condors, and the elusive puma. Prepare to be constantly challenged and eternally rewarded by this breathtaking, rugged landscape.
• Location/Transport: The gateway town is Puerto Natales, Chile. Fly into Punta Arenas (PUQ), then take a 3-hour bus to Puerto Natales. From there, public or private shuttles run directly into the National Park (about 2 hours).
• Activities: The essential activity is the Mirador Base de las Torres day hike. For serious trekkers, the W Trek takes 4-5 days, and the full O Circuit takes 7-10 days. Other activities include sailing to Grey Glacier and horseback riding (cabalgatas) across the pampas.
• Food/Accommodation: Accommodation inside the park is limited and expensive, consisting of refugios (huts with dorms/private rooms) or designated campsites. Refugio prices are steep (often $100-$300 USD/night for food and bed). Stay in Puerto Natales for cheaper hotels (approx. $50-$100 USD/night). Don't leave without trying the rich, traditional Patagonian Cordero al Palo.
• Pro Tips: The hiking season is October to April (Southern Hemisphere summer). Book all refugios or campsites up to 6 months in advance, as capacity is highly regulated. Be ready for the infamous Patagonian wind—it can be intense! Layers, waterproof gear, and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable.
