🍽️ A Surprise Western Gem in Taiping – MJ’s 明記 Review

While driving back to Penang from Ipoh, we made a lunch stop in Taiping and stumbled upon MJ’s 明記, a hidden gem that pleasantly surprised us. Located in what many would call a quieter town, this cozy and thoughtfully decorated restaurant offered a surprisingly refined take on Western fare — something we didn’t expect to find in Taiping.

The ambiance was welcoming and warm, with a modern yet homely feel. Although the server attending to us seemed a little inexperienced, he was friendly and genuinely trying his best, which we appreciated. To our delight, the owner himself came over to help clarify some questions about the menu — a nice personal touch that added to the positive experience.

When the food arrived, we were impressed. Each dish was well-executed, flavorful, and nicely plated. The family enjoyed every bite, and it was clear that the kitchen put real effort into both the quality and presentation of the food. For what we got, the prices were very reasonable, making it all the more worthwhile.

Overall, MJ’s is a standout in the Taiping dining scene — a place where great food, heartfelt service, and cozy atmosphere come together. Definitely recommended if you’re in the area and craving something Western with soul.
