An old shrine registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a "cultural property of the ancient capital of Kyoto". It is said that it was built in the 3rd year of Kohei (1060) as a Chinjusha of Uji Byodo-in Temple, which was built in the first year of Tenki (1053). As a guardian deity that protects the land of Uji, it continues to be worshipped by a wide range of people from the common people to the nobles, and still attracts a lot of reverence.
The main hall, built in the late Heian period, is said to be the oldest existing shrine building in Japan. The building, which was built 1,000 years ago, conveys the atmosphere of the past as it was at that time. The worship hall, which was completed in the 3rd year of Kenho (1215) in the Kamakura period, is built in the architectural style of Neden-zukuri, which was used for the residences of nobles and samurai. It is very rare and considered valuable that residential architecture is used in a shrine that enshrines gods. Both the main hall and the worship hall are designated as national treasures.
