Kumamoto Sankaku-cho - Former Sankaku Port Ferry Terminal Building (Sea Pyramid): A contemporary architectural masterpiece that can be seen right outside the station

#July2025

Upon exiting JR Sankaku Station, the striking Sankaku Ferry Terminal Building, nicknamed the "Sea Pyramid" for its conical shape, is immediately visible. The building is part of the Kumamoto Artpolis project, which aims to elevate environmental design and urban architecture, preserve cultural heritage through unique design, and establish Kumamoto as a hub for architectural and cultural creativity.

Designed by architect Ye Xiangrong, the ferry terminal features a double helix structure, blending architectural aesthetics with functionality, symbolizing the continuation and rebirth of the port's history. Its massive cone, 34 meters in diameter and 25 meters high, is not only a visual focal point but also a key landmark connecting transportation and travelers' memories. A skylight at the top of the building lets light in during the day and reflects back at night, imbuing the space with a tranquil and sacred atmosphere.

As a key gateway to Triangle Harbor, the building still serves as a ferry terminal. Visitors can stroll along the spiral ramp, gazing at the harbor scenery while experiencing the extraordinary architectural experience.
