A trip to the Outback would not be complete without seeing the rock crop called Uluru (or Ayers Rock), which has always been sacred to the aborigines of Australia. A good six hour ride from Alice Springs one way (yes, that is half a day on return), either join a local tour or drive and aim to stay at the resort there. It takes some serious planning because the tours from Alice Springs do not depart every day of the week. It was a wonder to come close to this sacred place where a few tribes inhabited. There were specific areas dedicated to the women of the tribes and those areas could not be photographed. Also there were rock paintings there showing how the tribes communicated vital survival information. Lots of legends also arose to interpret the features on the surface of the rock. The tour ended with a sunset barbecue with frontal views of the rock.
