The colorful houses on the island look great even in bad weather😉

Little legend: Most of the residents living in Burano are fishermen. In order to let their husbands recognize their houses in the fog when they return home, the wives of fishermen painted their houses in different colors so that they can recognize their houses from a distance.

The fact is that in the ancient Middle Ages when the Black Death was prevalent, families infected with the Black Death would paint their houses with white lime powder to disinfect the bacteria. In order to let others know that they were not infected with the Black Death, every household painted their houses in different colors to show their innocence!
