On a sunny morning in Wakayama, I started my day at the city center's Wakayama Castle. Climbing up the stone steps, the imposing castle walls and the white main keep came into view, transporting me back to the Sengoku period. Inside the keep, exhibits of armor, ancient documents, and samurai swords were on display. From the top floor, I enjoyed a breathtaking panoramic view of Wakayama City and the Kinokawa River.
After leaving the castle, I strolled to Momijidani Garden, just a few minutes' walk from the west exit. The garden features a serene stream, stone bridges over the water, and koi fish swimming leisurely under the shadows of maple trees. The scenery is so tranquil that it makes you lose track of time. In autumn, the fiery red maples are stunning, while in spring, the pale pink cherry blossoms create a dreamy atmosphere. Each season offers its own unique charm.
This half-day trip was a perfect blend of historical immersion in the first half and the serene beauty of a Japanese garden in the second half. It was both culturally enriching and relaxing.
