Wakayama Castle is a symbol of Wakayama City. During the Sengoku period, Toyotomi Hidenaga, the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, pacified the Kishu region and was granted the territory. Under Hideyoshi's orders, Wakayama Castle was constructed in 1585. It was later destroyed by American bombing during World War II and was rebuilt in 1958. Wakayama Castle, along with Himeji Castle in Hyogo and Matsuyama Castle in Ehime, is known as one of Japan's three major flatland-mountain castles. Wakayama Castle is also a famous spot for viewing cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. From the castle keep, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Wakayama City. The castle park also features 'Reception Ninjas' who support tourism. These ninjas serve as guides and translators, help take commemorative photos, and assist those with mobility issues in climbing the castle tower. When visiting Wakayama, be sure to stop by and explore.
