🎵 Arriving at the Negombo Fish Market in Sri Lanka, the beautiful melody of the "Fisherman's Song" lingers in my mind: "Clouds float in the sea and sky, fish hide in the water, drying fishing nets in the morning sun, the sea breeze blows in my face. The tide rises, the waves surge, fishing boats drift east and west. Gently cast the net, pull the rope tight, and wait for the fish in the mist."
🐟 Negombo Fish Market, known as a "Seafood Paradise," is located in Negombo, Sri Lanka. It is one of Sri Lanka's most charming fishing villages and a Lonely Planet recommended attraction.
🇱🇰 We came here early in the morning, drawn by the sun-drying fish laid out like rice paddies. The strong fishy smell, the damp soil, the low sheds, the bamboo baskets for fish, and more, all continue the fishing village life since the late 16th century.
✨ Features and Highlights:
1⃣️ The Negombo Fish Market gradually developed into a busy trading port after the Dutch replaced the Portuguese in Negombo in 1640, and it is especially renowned for its fish market.
2⃣️ Fishermen usually go out to sea at night to cast their nets and bring the caught fish to the seaside fish market before dawn for processing and sale. Here, you can experience their centuries-old way of life up close.
3⃣️ This is a photography mecca, with spectacular scenes of fishermen fishing, drying fish, and selling, forming Sri Lanka's most characteristic slice-of-life scenes.
4⃣️ Here you can see large-scale drying areas, with all kinds of fish neatly arranged on the beach, a unique and stunning sight!
5⃣️ Countless seabirds, such as crows, egrets, and seagulls, soar over the seaside, leisurely enjoying the seafood, creating a beautiful picture with the fishing boats and waves.
6⃣️ The hustle and bustle of the fish market starts early in the morning, with 5 am to 9 am being the best time to visit. The fishermen are very friendly and are happy to have their photos taken or pose for pictures with you.
7⃣️ Negombo Fish Market is located 7 km north of Sri Lanka's Bandaranaike International Airport and about 30 km from Colombo. You can choose to take a taxi, rent a car, or use public transport to get there.
