Nanputuo Temple 🛕

We stepped into Nanputuo Temple as the morning light slid across the tiled roofs, the air already thick with the scent of incense and blooming lotuses. The halls rose quietly around us, painted in deep reds and golds that seemed to glow without effort. Pilgrims moved slowly between altars, pressing their palms together, their whispers folding into the hush that hung beneath the eaves. Bells chimed softly from somewhere higher up, carried by the breeze like distant reminders. 🕊️🛕🌸

Climbing the stone steps behind the temple, we found the rocks warm underhand, the city gradually unfolding below, Gulangyu faint across the sea haze. Monks in saffron robes passed us without hurry, their footsteps barely breaking the stillness. At the top, the temple complex felt far away, tucked into the mountain like it had always been part of the stone. Nanputuo didn’t feel like a place built — it felt like something that had grown, a quiet pocket where time thinned and the world outside waited patiently for your return. 🌄🍃🕰️
