Two-Day Trip to Xiaoliuqiu, Taiwan: Don't Forget Sun Protection

The summer sun in Xiaoliuqiu is scorching. Our friends from Kaohsiung were quite shocked that we chose this time to visit the island, and they mentioned that even though they live nearby, they wouldn't dare to go during this season. After experiencing it firsthand, we realized they weren't exaggerating. Even for Hong Kongers accustomed to hot and humid weather, the heat was intense. Despite being a small island surrounded by the sea, if you're planning to visit during this season, make sure to take proper precautions against the heat.

The locals on the island are incredibly friendly. When we arrived, there were no buses available. We stopped by a small shop to ask for directions to our guesthouse and about renting bicycles. A kind lady immediately called another lady, who then drove us and our luggage on her scooter to a bicycle rental shop located on a slope. She even helped us negotiate the rental price. When we returned the bicycles at the end of our trip before heading to the pier, the shop owner decided on the spot to personally transport us and our luggage to the pier, waving goodbye only after ensuring we were all set.

The island is dotted with grand temples, and the murals along the roads are all ocean-themed. While the sun is blazing, cycling around the island is manageable as long as you have adequate sun protection and shade. The paths are well-marked and easy to navigate.

In addition to the friendly locals, even the cats we encountered were incredibly affectionate. Without hesitation, they would come over, sit in front of us, or even lie down, gazing at us with their big, round eyes. They were absolutely adorable.
