Two-Day Travel Guide to Mawei Post Station
Mawei Post Station is a tourist destination that blends historical legends with Guanzhong folk culture. Two days are enough to deeply experience its historical heritage and local customs. Now, let's explore Mawei Post Station together!
Day 1: Historical Exploration and Folk Culture Introduction
- Morning: Upon arrival at Mawei Post Station, head first to the Tomb of Yang Guifei (a protected cultural relic, separate ticket required). Here, listen to the love story of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Yang Guifei and the historical background of the "Mawei Slope Incident." Visit the tomb mound, steles, and other relics to feel the weight of a thousand years of history. Recommended visit time: 1.5 hours.
- Noon: Enter the Mawei Post Station Folk Culture Experience Park and go straight to the food street for lunch. Besides traditional dishes like saozi noodles, roujiamo (meat sandwich), lamb blood soup, and steamed rice cakes, you can also try specialties such as biang biang noodles, baked cold noodles, puffed oil cakes, donkey meat sandwiches, and Guifei cakes. For 50-80 RMB per person, you can taste a variety of Guanzhong flavors.
- Afternoon: First, visit the Mawei Post Station ancient relay station ruins. Through restored buildings and exhibits, learn about the functions of ancient relay stations and the transportation history described as "one station after another, riders like stars streaming." Then, head to the folk workshop street, where you can watch traditional crafts like weaving, oil pressing, vinegar brewing, and tofu making, and even participate in hands-on activities such as grinding soy milk and pounding glutinous rice cakes, immersing yourself in Guanzhong folk culture. Finally, stroll through the scenic area to admire the loess cliffs, cave dwellings, and replica ancient streets, soaking in the rich Guanzhong atmosphere.
- Evening: Choose accommodation near the scenic area, such as the Howard Johnson Hotel Xingping or Hanting Hotel (Xingping Zhongchang Ruyi City branch), for convenient travel. If you have energy, enjoy the Mawei Post Station light show at night—when lanterns light up, the ancient streets and buildings are bathed in warm light, creating a strong ambiance. You can also visit night snack stalls to experience the local nightlife.
Day 2: In-Depth Exploration and Surrounding Expansion
- Morning: Choose your activity based on interest.
- Cultural Experience: Visit a teahouse within the scenic area, order a pot of Shaanxi Fu tea, listen to a segment of Qin opera or Guanzhong folk tunes, and enjoy a leisurely slow life. Alternatively, visit Huangshan Palace (about 2 km from Yang Guifei’s tomb, free admission). This early Taoist sacred site, built in the second year of Emperor Hui of the Western Han Dynasty, still has buildings like the Sanqing Hall and the Nine Palaces and Eighteen Caves. You can also see a 1,200-year-old ancient locust tree planted by Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, experiencing the blend of Taoist culture and historical relics. Recommended visit time: 1 hour.
- Leisure and Entertainment: Visitors with children can go to the children’s play area, zoo (additional fee required), or check out popular ancient battlefield spots and the water park (open in summer) for interactive entertainment.
- Noon: Return to the Folk Culture Experience Park to continue exploring untasted foods, or choose a farmhouse restaurant nearby to order iron pot stews or farmhouse stir-fries and savor authentic Guanzhong rural flavors.
- Afternoon: If it’s fruit harvest season (such as strawberries, cherries, or grapes), visit nearby picking gardens around Mawei Post Station (check in advance for nearby farms) to enjoy the fun of picking fruit by hand. Then browse the handicraft shops in the scenic area to select Guanzhong specialty souvenirs like fabric crafts, clay sculptures, paper cuttings, and Erguai Mahua (a type of fried dough twist), perfect as gifts. Afterward, conclude your trip.
