Yangzhou is a poetic ancient city in southern China. Here's how to arrange your two-day visit:
Day One:
In the morning, visit Slender West Lake, entering from the south gate and strolling along the willow-lined embankment to admire the reflections of Five Pavilion Bridge and White Pagoda. The lake boat tour is worth experiencing to feel the charm of "flowers and willows on both banks depending entirely on water." At noon, enjoy authentic Yangzhou breakfast tea at Quiyuan Teahouse inside the scenic area. Recommended dishes include crab roe soup dumplings, scalded shredded tofu, and jade shumai.
In the afternoon, visit Ge Garden, one of China's four famous gardens, known for its bamboo and rock arrangements and ingeniously designed four-season rockeries. Then walk to Dongguan Street, a historic street preserving many Ming and Qing dynasty buildings where you can buy local specialties like Xie Fuchun perfume powder and Sanhe Simei pickles. In the early evening, dine at the Chu Cha Dan Fan restaurant on Dongguan Street, trying Yangzhou fried rice and lion's head meatballs.
Day Two:
In the morning, head to Fuchun Teahouse for breakfast tea. Must-order items include Three Treasures dumplings, thousand-layer oil cake, and Kuilong Pearl tea. After breakfast, tour He Garden to appreciate its Chinese-Western fusion architecture and ingenious corridor designs.
For lunch, dine at Shiweitian Restaurant nearby, where the braised dried tofu strips and Wensi tofu are recommended. In the afternoon, visit Daming Temple and climb Qiling Pagoda for a panoramic view of Yangzhou. If time permits, visit the Double Museum to learn about Yangzhou's history, culture, and woodblock printing techniques.
Accommodation recommendations:
For budget options, try Orange Hotel near Dongguan Street; for mid to high-end, consider Yingbin Hotel by Slender West Lake.
Transportation tips:
Yangzhou attractions are concentrated, so taxi fares are reasonable. You can also take tourist bus lines. Shared electric bikes are a convenient choice for exploring the old town.
Food tips:
Yangzhou goose is worth trying, recommended at the goose stall on Wangyue Road. In the evening, you can enjoy barbecue on Guoqing Road and experience Yangzhou's nightlife.
