Nanping Village is located in the southwest of Yi County, Anhui Province. It is a large ancient village with a thousand-year history. Many famous films such as "Ju Dou" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" were shot here. But I didn't go there for this, I wanted to see the well-preserved Hui-style buildings there.
Nanping Village has nearly 300 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, 36 wells and 72 alleys. On a central axis of more than 200 meters from the beginning to the end of the village, eight large and small ancestral halls are still preserved. This ancestral hall complex is the only one of its kind in the province. Since the Ye family moved here from Baimashan in Qimen in the late Yuan Dynasty, the village has expanded rapidly. By the Ming Dynasty, the three major clans of Ye, Cheng and Li had gathered together and ruled the village separately. Especially after the middle of the Qing Dynasty, the mutual comparison and competition among the three major surnames prompted Nanping Village to enter its heyday. The village has a population of more than 1,000 people, but has 36 wells, 72 ancient alleys, and more than 300 ancient houses from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The village still preserves a considerable number of ancestral halls, branch halls and family halls, and is praised by tourists as the "Museum of Ancient Chinese Ancestral Hall Architecture."
As soon as I arrived at Nanping Village and saw the vast yellow rapeseed fields against the backdrop of the ancient Hui-style buildings with white walls and black tiles, I knew I had come to the right place.
