A healing journey where you fall asleep to the sound of the river—this hidden gem of a homestay is full of delightful surprises.
Standing at the entrance with my suitcase, I couldn’t help but worry if this "riverside homestay" was just another overhyped Instagram filter. But the moment I opened the door, I was instantly soothed. The river outside the floor-to-ceiling windows shimmered under the setting sun, the wooden floors glowed warmly, and the air carried a faint citrus aroma. Half of my travel fatigue seemed to melt away in an instant.
During check-in, the attentive host reminded me that the riverside view at 6 PM is the most photogenic. Walking on the soft carpet into the room, I was greeted by a large scenic bathtub facing the river, complete with bath salts and scented candles thoughtfully placed nearby. As night fell, soaking in the warm water while watching the lights gradually illuminate across the river, with the river breeze carrying a hint of moisture, even my breathing felt sweeter.
What surprised me the most was the homestay’s intangible cultural heritage experience. On the second afternoon, I joined a workshop led by a heritage craftsman to make lacquer fans. Brushing base lacquer and applying gold leaf onto the delicate bamboo frame was a fascinating tactile experience. The host patiently guided me in painting mountain and water patterns with fine brushes. Despite my clumsy hands, I managed to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake. That fan now sits on my desk, and every time I see it, I’m reminded of the focused and leisurely moments of that day.
Waking up to the sound of birds over the river, I enjoyed breakfast on the terrace in a wicker chair—congee paired with freshly fried dough sticks, and homemade pickled radish by the owner. Watching the morning mist rise from the river and fishing boats glide slowly across the water, I suddenly understood why people say, "The essence of travel lies in moments of slowing down."
If you’re looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle, consider staying here for a few days. Fall asleep to the sound of the river, wake up with the morning light, craft a breathing lacquer fan with your own hands, and let the gentle scenery and thoughtful service heal all your fatigue and anxiety.
