Yokohama Park, opened in 1876 (Meiji 9), is Japan's oldest park. It was originally called "Higa Park" because it was accessible to both foreigners ("Higa" for "they") and Japanese ("Ga" for "us"). In 1909 (Meiji 42), the park was renamed "Yokohama Park," and the garden was dismantled. Later, in 1978 (Showa 53), the park underwent renovations, and in 2017 (Heisei 29), the Japanese garden section was officially designated as "Higa Garden."
