York has a long history, dating back to 71 AD. This city has witnessed the glorious eras of the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, and Normans.
York's ancient city walls are the most well-preserved and longest among all ancient city walls in England. The walls were first built during the Roman rule, then reinforced by Danish occupiers. Most of the walls that remain today were rebuilt between the 12th and 14th centuries.
York Minster is not only the heart of the Church of England but also one of the most magnificent Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe. Construction of the cathedral began in 1230 and was completed in 1472 after more than two hundred years of building, with each period leaving unique traces of Gothic architecture.
