The Majesty of Switzerland's Matterhorn: Sunnegga Viewpoint

During this trip, I visited the heart of the Alps at the Sunnegga Matterhorn Viewpoint! 🇨🇭🌄🏔️

🛄 | Ascending through a tunnel to the skies
Taking the Sunnegga Express funicular from Zermatt city center, a 4-minute ride through a dark, long tunnel suddenly opens up to dazzling sunlight and a panoramic view of the Alps. This is the Sunnegga Viewpoint, located at an altitude of 2,288 meters. The scenery from this high vantage point felt like arriving at a garden in the sky. The air was noticeably cooler, but its crispness was invigorating.

🌿 A perfect spot to view the Matterhorn head-on
From the viewpoint, the Matterhorn's perfect triangular silhouette unfolds directly in front of you. On cloudless days, the boundary between the blue sky and the snowy peaks is strikingly clear, with the snow on the mountain's summit reflecting the sunlight in a golden glow. Below, green forests and tiny chalets are scattered like dots, with hiking trails weaving through them. It’s a breathtaking blend of nature’s grandeur and human harmony.

🏞️ The Matterhorn's reflection in Leisee
A short descent from the viewpoint leads to Leisee, a lake famous for its 'mirror view' of the Matterhorn reflected on its surface. Families were relaxing around the lake, children played by the water, and ducks swam peacefully. Watching the scene, you can feel the passage of time as the colors of the mountains, sky, and lake gradually change.

1️⃣ How to get there – Take the Sunnegga Express funicular from the center of Zermatt village to reach the viewpoint in just 4 minutes. No hiking required.
2️⃣ Recommended time – In the morning, the Matterhorn silhouette is more distinct due to less backlight, while in the afternoon, the sunlight gently touches the mountain, creating warm-toned photos.
3️⃣ Hiking options – If you’re up for it, consider hiking from Sunnegga to Blauherd or Rothorn. Each section offers a different angle of the Matterhorn.
