Often called “Shanghai’s Venice,” Zhujiajiao is a 1,700-year-old water town located on the city’s outskirts. Its network of canals, stone bridges, and traditional houses offer a glimpse into ancient Jiangnan culture. Visitors can take boat rides, stroll narrow lanes, and explore historic temples and gardens. Local snacks like zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and roasted soybeans are popular treats. The town is especially enchanting in the early morning when mist rises over the water, and the crowds haven’t yet arrived. Zhujiajiao provides a slower, more nostalgic side of Shanghai life.
