Emerging from the bumpy Rock Road, we were covered in dust from head to toe. The sudden return of cell signal had us excitedly posting online: "Driving the worst roads to see the most stunning views!" Because once you've traversed this road, you'll discover the true breathtaking beauty hidden behind Gannan's Zhagana.

Exploring the wonders along the way, the Rock Road on National Highway 248 behind Zhagana offers extreme and awe-inspiring scenery, making it the most stunning highlight of our Gannan journey.

Where is the Rock Road in Zhuoni?
Starting from Daiba Village, the highest point in Zhagana, and heading towards the small town of Zhagulu by the Tao River, the Rock Road spans about 150 kilometers of gravel paths. Due to the poor road conditions, it took us over five hours to make a round trip, but it was absolutely worth it!

What to see on the Rock Road?
Zhagana is surrounded by jagged stone mountains. As the altitude decreases, forests, grasslands, and rivers come into view. The entire route offers a mix of vast open landscapes and secluded scenic spots, truly a paradise for the eyes but a challenge for the tires.

🚙 Road Conditions
The best views come with the toughest roads. The 80-kilometer stretch from Zhagana to Niba Town, the midpoint of the Rock Road, is built along cliffs with potholes and washboard roads repeating endlessly. Adding to the challenge, this section is under construction, creating massive amounts of dust.

⛰ Highlights
The essence of the Rock Road lies in the section around Guangai Mountain and Stone City. Traveling through this rocky empire, the most beautiful scenery is always just around the next corner. Crossing the hills brings a sense of awe and solitude like no other.

If you're not in a rush, like us, find a scenic spot along the way to set up your chairs and table. Brew a cup of coffee, and take your time to quietly enjoy the miraculous creations of nature before you.

⚠️ Tips
1️⃣ Use cycling navigation for the route Zhagana—Zhuoni County. The full length is 150 kilometers and takes about 5-6 hours. There are almost no shops along the way, so make sure to prepare enough drinking water and snacks before setting off.
