Atami Pregnancy Well

热海怀胎井

Huaitai Well, located on the right bank of the Zaotang River in Rehai, is also known as Longfeng Well. It consists of two springs at the same level, with a water temperature of 88°C and a flow rate of 0.02 L/s. Twelve stone balustrades are engraved with the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. Its water, rich in trace elements and radon, regulates nervous system excitation, inhibits psychological imbalance, promotes metabolism, dilates blood vessels, and regulates endocrine function, earning it the reputation of a "miracle remedy."

Introduction

  • Attraction Location: Rehai Geothermal Scenic Area, Qingshui Village (清水乡), Tengchong County, Baoshan (保山腾冲). The Pregnancy Well (怀胎井 / Huáitāi Jǐng) sits on the right bank of the Zǎotáng River inside the Rehai hot-spring circuit. (Rehai / 热海景区, 腾冲清水乡) .

  • What it is (short): The “Pregnancy Well” is actually two neighboring geothermal spring openings — traditionally called the Dragon Well (龙井) and Phoenix Well (凤井). Locals and visitors long told tales that drinking the spring water can help fertility, so it’s known locally as a “pregnancy” or “fertility” spring. The wells are rimmed by carved stone blocks (12 zodiac designs) and sit among many other hot springs and vents in the Rehai loop.

  • History / Natural origin: Rehai (literally “Hot Sea”) is one of China’s important geothermal areas; the scenic loop has over 80 hot springs and gas vents produced by volcanic/geothermal activity. The Pregnancy Well is a natural geothermal spring — its reputation comes from local folklore and the long history of therapeutic use of mineral/thermal waters here rather than scientific proof of fertility effects. The Rehai area and its named springs (Big Boiling Pot / 大滚锅, Pearl Spring / 珍珠泉, Drum Spring / 鼓鸣泉, Spectacle Spring / 眼镜泉) have been described in local records and promoted as a key geothermal tourism site.

  • “Architecture” / Appearance: The Pregnancy Well is not a man-made building but two small spring mouths set along the boardwalk; the stone well rims and the carved 12-zodiac panels around the rims are the main human-made features. The wells sit inside the scenic area’s wooden boardwalk and viewing platforms; you approach along a ring trail that threads past many other springs and fumaroles.

  • Cultural value / folklore: Locally the well is nicknamed a “gift of nature” and often called the “send-child Guanyin” in tourist copy because of the fertility legend: many older visitors say women who drank (or merely visited) had children afterward. In addition to folklore, the spring water is touted in park literature for containing minerals and trace elements, which local sources claim are helpful for metabolism and endocrine balance — again, these are traditional/marketing claims rather than verified medical endorsements.

  • Other notes: The Pregnancy Well is visited as part of the Rehai circular trail (the Rehai sightseeing loop). Because the whole area is geothermally active, there are strong sulfur smells, hot steam and dangerously hot pools — touching the water is unsafe.

Visiting Information

  • Opening Hours: Rehai Scenic Area is open year-round; commonly published park hours are approximately 08:00–19:00 / 08:00–20:00 (admission/ticket sales usually stop ~1 hour before closing). Individual online guides give small variations (some list 7:30–19:00 or 08:00–20:00). Best practice: check the park phone (+86-875-5133333) or ticketing page for the day you travel.

  • Ticket price: Standard park admission is commonly published as ¥50 (adult); half-price concessions for children / seniors / students often apply (e.g., ~¥25). There are many package options (park + shuttle / park + hot-spring bath / park + meal) that raise the combined price (examples of packages range from ~¥65 to ¥268 depending on inclusions). Always confirm current price before purchase.

  • Recommended visiting time / length: Plan 1.5–4 hours to walk the Rehai boardwalk, see the Big Boiling Pot (大滚锅), Pregnancy Well (怀胎井), Pearl Spring (珍珠泉) and a few bathing/spa areas. Recommended sightseeing time on many guides is 2–4 hours.

  • Best photo spots (for Pregnancy Well & Rehai loop):
    • The wooden boardwalk above the boiling pools (wide steam views).
    • The Big Boiling Pot (大滚锅 / Dà Gǔn Guō) — dramatic boiling surface and steam clouds.
    • Pearl Spring (珍珠泉 / Zhēnzhū Quán) — the heart-shaped pool with many small bubble vents (photogenic at sunrise/early morning).
    • The Viewing platform near the Pregnancy Well (怀胎井 / Huáitāi Jǐng) — the carved zodiac rim makes for detail shots. Early morning or late afternoon gives less crowd and softer light. Avoid walking into steam plumes for safety/visibility.

  • Time reference / best season: Rehai is open year-round. Late autumn and winter (Nov–Feb) can be especially atmospheric because the colder air makes the steam more photogenic; summer is lush but hotter. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking. The park is often busier on Chinese public holidays.

  • Safety & health notes: Do NOT touch or enter the boiling pools — temperatures often exceed 80–90°C. Follow boardwalk signs and barriers. People with respiratory sensitivity should be aware of strong sulfur fumes. The pregnancy-help claims are folklore; consult a doctor for medical advice.

  • • Self-drive / car: Drive and park at the scenic-area parking lot (small vehicle parking fee commonly applied). Use navigation to “腾冲热海风景区 / Rehai Scenic Area.”

Nearby Attractions (within ~2 km)

  • "info-value"
  • Inside the Rehai Scenic Area the main features are all on the same boardwalk loop and are therefore very close to one another (walking distances usually from a few tens of metres up to ~1 km along the trail). Approximate list (names in English — Chinese), distances given as walking along the boardwalk from the Pregnancy Well area:
  • • Big Boiling Pot (大滚锅 / Dà Gǔn Guō) — ~50–300 m (a few minutes’ walk along the boardwalk). The most dramatic steam/pool in the area.
  • • Pearl Spring (珍珠泉 / Zhēnzhū Quán) — ~100–500 m (on the same loop; heart-shaped pool with many bubble vents).
  • • Drum Spring (鼓鸣泉 / Gǔmíng Quán) — ~200–600 m (an intermittent geyser / resonant spring nearby on the loop).
  • • Spectacle / “Glasses” Spring (眼镜泉 / Yǎnjìng Quán) — ~100–500 m (near Pearl Spring; formed by deposits that look like glasses).
  • • Beauty Pool / Yù Gǔ (美女池 / 浴谷温泉) (spa & bathing area) — ~300–800 m (may be reached on foot inside the park or via the park’s paths / shuttle). Many visitors combine the sightseeing loop and a spa bath in the adjacent bathing resort.
  • How to get between them: All are linked by the Rehai boardwalk / circular trail — simply follow the wooden walkways and signs; the ring route is designed for walking and viewing the hot springs in sequence.

Tips for Visitors

  • "info-value"
  • • Safety first: stay on boardwalks, heed barriers and warning signs — many pools are scalding hot.
  • • Bring a jacket in cool months: steam looks best in cool weather (autumn/winter); mornings are often less crowded and more photogenic.
  • • Wear comfortable shoes — the loop involves walking on wooden paths and some steps.
  • • Cash & small change for snacks (eggs), local stalls and small souvenir purchases — although larger vendors/parks accept cards.
  • • Don’t drink the water for medical reasons — folklore suggests fertility benefits, but there’s no medical guarantee; if you try local water/snacks check hygiene and ask staff. (Folklore only.)
  • • Combine the visit — pair Rehai with other Tengchong sights (Heshun / 和顺古镇, Volcano Geological Park) to make the most of the area.
  • • Book packages if you want a hot-spring bath — many visitors combine the Rehai sightseeing ticket with a paid spa / hot-spring soak at the Beauty Pool (美女池) or Yugu / 浴谷 facilities. Packages can save time and sometimes money.

The Pregnancy Well in Tengchong Rehai Scenic Area is located on the right bank of the Zaotang River in the scenic area. It consists of two springs side by side, called Longquan and Fengquan, which are at the same horizontal level. The spring water is rich in various trace elements and water radon, and has significant health benefits such as regulating the nervous system, promoting metabolism, dilating blood vessels and regulating endocrine. It is especially effective for women with irregular menstruation and endocrine disorders, and is known as the "magical prescription" and "Guanyin who delivers children". The well edge is decorated with stone railings carved with zodiac patterns. Folk legend says that it was named after a local couple who successfully conceived after drinking this water more than 300 years ago, and this gave rise to the prayer custom of "drinking Longquan to give birth to a boy and drinking Fengquan to give birth to a girl".

It is said that drinking the water from Atami's pregnancy well will lead to pregnancy.

It smelled like rotten egg water, so I drank a little with a skeptical attitude.

The Pregnancy Well is one of many springs, and few gentlemen go near it. Does it have the same effect as the "Mother and Child River" in Journey to the West?

By mei |

The Pregnancy Well, also known as the Dragon and Phoenix Well, originates from a beautiful legend claiming the water brings children. It consists of two springs at the same level, with a water temperature of 88°C. Twelve stone railings are engraved with the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. The water is rich in trace elements, promoting metabolism and regulating endocrine function. It is particularly effective for menstrual disorders and endocrine disorders, often bringing relief to infertile women. It is known as nature's fertility-giving Guanyin.

In the Atami scenic area, hot springs can be seen gushing everywhere.

The water in the pregnancy well is 98 degrees on the left and 96 degrees on the right. The staff said that the well water can be drunk directly. I filled a bottle, cooled it and tasted it. It tasted like water for boiled eggs.

By Fileeona |

Visitors can drink the water at the Pregnancy Well, and many bring their own bottles to take home. What does it taste like? A faint smell of rotten eggs (sulfur dioxide). What are its benefits? The trace elements only take effect after long-term drinking. Don't think even a man can get pregnant just by drinking it.

By Zhang Jie |

It is said that drinking it will lead to pregnancy. There are two sips in total. It is said that drinking the left one will lead to a boy, and drinking the right one will lead to a girl. I didn't dare to drink it.

It is said that drinking the well water here can help you get pregnant, but unfortunately I am a man.

The Pregnancy Well, as its name suggests, possesses remarkable properties. The scientific basis for this claim is that it contains a variety of mineral elements, has a pH of 9.0, and can regulate the body's endocrine system. Nearby, a small bamboo tube is where curious visitors, young and old, draw water to drink. The water is 88 degrees Celsius, so I filled a cup and slowly drank it, feeling incredibly soothed.

The water in this well is very clear and the temperature doesn’t seem too high. I heard that there is a beautiful legend about this well.

Atami's Kaitai-i is a popular spot for tourists to try. Actually, the taste isn't great, and many people simply try it because they see it's from Kaitai-i, without understanding the specifics of how to drink it, so it can be a bit confusing. However, if you take a guide and read the signage carefully, it's still a great spot.

A geothermal hot spring attraction with a story...

By SEASON |

The water at the Pregnancy Well is said to help you conceive a boy. There are two wells, each with hot springs. There are bamboo ladles to scoop up the water for washing hands or taking it away. There's a small stone mill near the well, probably for cooling down. The water is quite hot, and someone with thin skin like me couldn't handle it. This spot is inside the Atami scenic area, halfway up the mountain. You have to go up before you reach the Atami Hot Pot, Pearl Spring, and Sister Springs to see the Pregnancy Well. You'll definitely see it if you continue up.

An attraction on the way to the Hot Sea Hot Pot feels unremarkable

By xgainiq |

It should be the smell of sulfur, very strong. It is not possible to get pregnant by drinking it, but it is still good for the body. If you have a glass bottle, I suggest you scoop some away. Forget about mineral water bottles, plastic ones are not safe. Be careful not to burn your mouth when drinking

By DaliClouds |

By Boundless Heart |

The more famous well in the park, as the name suggests, specializes in treating infertility, haha. In fact, these are all legends. There are two wells because of this. Legends say that drinking different waters can give birth to sons and daughters respectively. It's like my friend said that eating onions will give birth to sons, and eating fish will also give birth to sons. These are legends to make everyone happy. But the strange thing is that these two wells used to be clear. Due to the Tengchong earthquake many years ago, one well is now clear and the other well is milky white. It is said that experts have not found the reason. I got some water to drink, and it didn't taste good. I could only say that I tried it. It had a faint smell of sulfur and a bit like the taste of water used to boil eggs in plain water. It didn't taste good.

By Victory |

There are only two wells, and I don’t know if they are real or not. Anyway, I encourage the men in my group to try it(^_^)

Those who want to have children can try this: boys on the left and girls on the right. Atami is worth a visit. If you have money, you can come here to enjoy the hot springs or soak your feet in the water from the big boiling pot of Atami.

By SiYoko_Ping |

Yes, it is this Pregnancy Well. Many people come here to drink. In fact, besides the smell of sulfur, it also tastes like boiled eggs. . . .

By small stones |

Be sure to bring a cup and try the water from the Pregnancy Well. The water temperature is also very high, so be careful to burn your hands. After tasting it, everyone said it tasted like boiled eggs. In short, it was not very tasty.

I brought a water cup with me to fill it up. People said, "Why does it smell like boiled eggs?" I don't know, but I thought it was fun. The water temperature was really high, and it was quite hot to hold the cup.

By Swim and swim |

Personally, I think the Pregnancy Spring is also very legendary. Out of sheer curiosity, my sisters and I all filled a large cup to drink.

By Little White Girl |

There are two pregnancy wells, one for giving birth to boys and the other for giving birth to girls. But don't drink too much, it has a sulfur smell and feels a bit smelly. The cleaning lady said that drinking too much is not good.

The left one is the boy's well, which is a little boiling, and the right one is the girl's well, which is slightly cooler and not boiling. Is this a match made in heaven?

Rehai, the representative of Tengchong's hot springs, is the oldest Tengchong hot spring resort and boasts the largest concentration of hot spring resources. It's currently undergoing continuous development, with a growing number of attractions. If you're visiting Tengchong, this is a great place to visit. The origin of the Pregnancy Well is said to be that drinking the water from it will lead to pregnancy... When I heard this legend as a child, I kind of believed it...

By Spring flowers and autumn fruits |

It's just a legend. If there really is infertility, then the place would be extremely crowded. Nowadays, food and air are the main culprits.

Now that we are in Tengchong, we should visit all the attractions and make the trip more interesting by reading some local legends.

By Guess who I am |

The Pregnancy Well is said to be able to treat female infertility and gynecological diseases. Out of curiosity, I also drank a cup of hot spring water. It had a smell of sulfur. Maybe the spring water contains a lot of minerals, which is why it can cure diseases.
