Big Boiling Pot in Rehai

热海大滚锅

The Big Boiling Pot is a landmark attraction in Atami, and as its name suggests, the pool truly resembles a cauldron. The pure, light blue hot spring water simmers constantly, bubbling with steam. The temperature inside the pot constantly reaches over 90 degrees Celsius, making it a truly spectacular sight. However, please be mindful of safety when visiting. In front of the cauldron, you might want to buy some eggs, strung on straw, and boil them. As one of Yunnan's Eighteen Oddities puts it, "The most bizarre thing about Yunnan is that eggs are sold on straw skewers."

The finale of Rehai Park is also the place with the strongest smell of rotten eggs in the entire scenic area. Zhu Xiaodou's cousin stayed far away and dared not get close.

The eggs in the area in front of the big boiling pot cannot be cooked through and are easily scalded by the steam.

These two steamers next to the big boiling pot can be used to steam anything as long as you have the ingredients.

I put the two bunches of eggs I bought in and made a mark.

Taking pictures next to the big boiling pot was also a torture, and Zhu Xiaodou was sweating profusely from the heat.

The Big Boiling Pot in Tengchong Rehai Scenic Area is the core geothermal wonder of the scenic area. It is a core component of the national 5A scenic area and volcanic geological park. People go to Tengchong just to see this pot. The water in the pot pool boils day and night like a giant pot, and the main vent erupts with a pulsating water column leaping out of the water, and steam rises in the air with a sulfur smell. The geological cause is due to the geothermal activity belt formed by the collision of the Eurasian Plate and the Indian Plate. The release of magma heat energy has created a rare high-temperature hot spring corridor. Xu Xiake of the Ming Dynasty once described its appearance in detail as "the pool is four or five acres in size, the middle is like a cauldron... boiling from below". It was listed as one of the "Twelve Scenic Spots of Tengyue" in the Qing Dynasty. Visitors can experience stringing eggs with straw ropes and cooking them in the spring (they are cooked in 5-6 minutes).

The end of the scenic area, the iconic location, the Big Boiling Pot.

A cauldron that never stops boiling, a literal cauldron;

There are actually tourists here who boil eggs, steam sweet potatoes, and potatoes;

The smell of sulfur in the air became stronger.

By A Laugh from the Ocean |

The pass includes a rice noodle set meal, which tastes average and the accompanying side dishes are delicious, enough for dinner.

By Encountering Qi along the way |

At the Dagunguo Restaurant just before leaving the scenic area, each person was given a bowl of rice noodles. The bowl was as big as a small basin, with boiling hot soup and smooth noodles, just enough quantity and flavor, and dinner was ready.

The most spectacular big boiling pot is where the most tourists gather, taking pictures, boiling eggs...

The famous Atami Hot Pot, where the water is constantly boiling and bubbling, the water temperature can reach 97 degrees Celsius.

Before, I thought that hot spring eggs were boiled in hot springs, but that’s not the case at all. The eggs are put into a small pot next to the big boiling pot and steamed by the hot steam for 10 to 15 minutes to be cooked. You must pay attention to safety when putting them in, and don’t put them in directly with your hands. The temperature of the hot steam is really high, the eggs are very tender, and there is a smell of sulfur!

By MIKA |

The water in the big boiling pot is so blue and there is steamed food next to it.

By Fishing Cat |

The heat with a sulphurous smell can be felt from a distance.

A steamer built using the heat from a large boiling pot. You can buy eggs and steam them next to the large boiling pot. It's so hot that it feels like they're almost cooked before you even get close to them.

By joy |

The pinnacle of the Atami scenic area. The "Big Boiling Pot" had whetted our appetites along the way. My son, carrying raw eggs, repeatedly asked, "When can we cook them?" Finally, after a brief rest on a wide platform and climbing numerous steps, we finally arrived at Atami's most famous "Big Boiling Pot"! The "Big Boiling Pot" is a man-made basin-shaped pool, 3 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters deep. Within it lies a large geothermal spring, bubbling year-round at 97°C, creating a deafening roar and billowing steam. The pool is flanked by exquisitely carved stone pillars and railings, and the floor and walls are covered in bright blue tiles, making the bubbling water from the spring resemble a shimmering sapphire. Through the slowly rising steam, the five large official script characters "Atami Big Boiling Pot" engraved on the stone wall, sometimes clear, sometimes hazy in the breeze, create a ethereal, ethereal scene.

By Big Hae Walking |

This steaming hot spring really looks like the mouth of a boiling pot. It is said that if a cow fell into it, it would instantly turn into soup. You cannot verify this unless you have seen it with your own eyes, but the steam coming out from it can quickly cook an egg. This is something I have seen with my own eyes.

By Cindy Yin |

While sulfur-containing hot springs are typically yellowish in color, the Atami hot springs, rich in sulfur and various minerals, are surprisingly clear and azure, like jade. You can also cook hot spring eggs nearby, which we enjoyed all-you-can-eat.

By Old bookworm_h |

The water in the big boiling pot is incredibly clear, a beautiful, crystal blue. At the entrance to the Atami scenic area, many women sell raw eggs, four per bag for 10 yuan. Next to the big boiling pot is a large bamboo steamer where you can steam eggs for 15 minutes. The ground near the big boiling pot is also incredibly hot, and many tourists take off their shoes to feel the warmth.

By Picking mallow |

The 97-degree boiling water rolled and steamed into mist that spread in all directions.

But please don’t get me wrong, the hot spring eggs in the scenic area are not steamed here, but in two specially carved steamers next to them.

Here, you can experience the first of Yunnan’s 18 oddities – “eggs skewered on grass”.

But please note that if you want to steam eggs in the steamer next to the big boiling pot, you need to buy the pre-skewered eggs at the gate of the scenic area: 5 yuan/skewer, 4 eggs per string.

Next to the big boiling pot are steamed eggs that have been steamed but not skewered. They are already steamed: 10 yuan/bag, and each string also has 4 eggs.

By float |

The steaming hot water made it clear we'd arrived at the Big Boiling Pot. The hot springs are at the top of the mountain, and there are many springs at the foot. The winding path up the mountain felt like a sauna, as the water is around 100 degrees Celsius, so be careful not to burn yourself! The Big Boiling Pot can be used to boil eggs, peanuts, potatoes, and other things. We saw many people carrying eggs on the way up, but we didn't buy any. The quiet environment is so relaxing even without soaking in the hot springs.

By Zhang Jie |

You can steam eggs next to the big boiling pot, 10 yuan per box, and they will be cooked in 15 minutes in the geothermal steamer. The eggs still have a sulfur smell when they are taken out, and they taste unique.

The famous boiling pot, shaped like the Bagua, has a water temperature of up to 97 degrees Celsius, a pool of clear, bright blue water that churns year-round.

By Minmin Sword Fairy's Travels |

As soon as the eggs arrived at the boiling pot, I could hear the sounds of “Wow, the eggs smell so good!”, “Wow, the eggs are so tender!”, “Wow, the eggs are so delicious!” I quickly ran over to check it out. It turned out that the eggs in the boiling pot were not boiled, but steamed using geothermal steam. So I opened the lid of the oversized steamer and put the chicken and duck eggs in.

The first egg, steamed in geothermal heat, had a texture very similar to the soft, dense texture of salted egg white (I don't know if it's a little spoiled, or just like that), with a mineral smell mixed with a slight, but not overpowering, sulfur smell. The second egg had almost no such smell. The third and fourth eggs were tender and bouncy, and tasted just like normal eggs.

Duck eggs are special. When you roll the duck eggs on the table to crack the shell, you can smell the smell of steamed cake. When you peel the eggshell, the egg white smells like yogurt. It tastes like the tender salted duck egg, which is better than chicken eggs.

Steaming eggs and duck eggs in geothermal water is a must-try. The egg skewers at the entrance are indeed cheaper than those in front of the big boiling pot, but I can't guarantee the quality. You can buy skewers at the entrance and use them as photo props before the big boiling pot. But never boil eggs in any of the hot springs before the big boiling pot. This is against the regulations of the scenic area and affects the environment.

By in a hurry |

The large boiling pot is at the top of the scenic area. It really looks like a well of boiling water, constantly spitting out bubbles. Next to it are several hot water tanks. Put eggs or corn in it and it will be cooked in a short time. Pay 30 yuan and the waiter will bring two buckets of water, one for soaking your feet and the other at 95 degrees. You can add hot water at any time. It's really comfortable.

By June Lotus |

There are a lot of people coming here to play. It is a tourist attraction and the water temperature is as high as 97 degrees. We also bought a bunch of eggs and put them on the large steamer next to it for more than ten minutes. They were quite tender.

By Pan D |

This is the largest hot spring, over 3 meters in diameter and reaching temperatures exceeding 97 degrees Celsius. Its shape resembles a cauldron, except the hot springs within are a stunning azure blue. Next to the cauldron are large steamers for steaming eggs and buns. On my way in, I was met with locals selling eggs by the string for 5-10 yuan. Most tourists bought them to cook while soaking in the hot springs. These eggs, strung together with grass, are one of Yunnan's eighteen unique wonders. You can also soak your feet in the hot springs near the cauldron for 60 yuan.

The park is actually very small, but it is definitely worth a visit.

By Flowers bloom and fall |

The temperature is really high, and it is always steaming hot. It takes about 20 minutes to steam the eggs on the steam, and the egg yolks are golden yellow and soft, very delicious. The egg weaving grandma is very hard-working, and her hands are red, swollen and cracked from the cold. The locals are very simple and honest. They just come close to ask if you want them, and they won't keep following you to sell them. If you go, you must buy one or two strings, which is also a small help to the locals.

Tengchong is a renowned geothermal scenic area in China. Currently, there are 64 geothermal activity areas and over 80 hot springs, with the highest water temperature reaching 96.3°C. The most intense and spectacular of these is the Tengchong Hot Spring, located approximately 8 kilometers west of the city. Surrounded by verdant mountains and a surging water, the area stretches from Liuhuangtang in the north to Songshanqing in the south, Zhongxiao Temple in the east, and Banana Garden in the west.

By Wandering cell |

Besides the Big Boiling Pot, there are several other geothermal pools of varying temperatures, all quite interesting and worth the price of admission. There's a geothermal museum at the entrance, but it's rarely visited, which is a shame. It would be a good place to learn about geothermal science if it had some audio guide.

The Hot Sea Hot Pot, also known as "a pool of hot water," is circular, 6.12 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters deep. It has three water jets, with a temperature of 97°C. Nearby, locals steam peanuts, potatoes, and corn using geothermal heat. Starving, I devoured them all with chili powder. The clever locals have developed a wooden barrel foot bath: a small amount of cold water is placed in a wooden barrel, and then a bucket of boiling water from the hot pot is added. The water can be added as needed, and more can be added if it cools. After a sleepless night and a morning of walking, it was a godsend, instantly revitalizing me.

By Zhong Xiaobao |

It is a place like a big hot pot of boiling water, but it is quite spectacular. There are two places next to it where you can put eggs to boil. They are about 80% cooked in about ten minutes.

By Walking and having fun |

In the steamer next to the boiling pot, potatoes and peanuts are steamed. You can buy them raw at the entrance of the scenic area and try them steamed here, or you can buy them steamed and eat them.

This is the end of Atami Park. There are many steps from the park entrance. Because there are hot springs everywhere, the heat and humidity here are very high. Elderly people or those with mobility issues should avoid this area. Once you get to the Big Hot Pot, the line to take pictures is quite long! So we just took a few photos from the outside.

The water in the Atami Hot Pot is very blue, a bit like swimming pool water. I hope it is natural.

The air was thick with the smell of sulfur; the water in the pool was boiling and dancing, and smoke hung over the pool. This is the Big Boiling Pot, the core attraction of Atami Park. Next to the Big Boiling Pot, there is a place for visitors to boil potatoes, eggs, and peanuts. Put them in the Big Boiling Pot and they will be cooked in no time.

Atami's most famous hot spring is the Atami Hot Spring. Legend has it that eggs can be cooked right in the hot spring, making it a truly authentic hot spring egg. But for the tourists that day, let's take a look at the spectacle: there were only people but no hot spring.

Next to the spring, there's a staff member registering. You hand them your eggs, and they'll give you a number plate, like 33. Once the eggs are done, they'll call your number and you can pick them up. Of course, the staff can't tell which skewer your eggs are on, but you wouldn't care anyway, right? As long as the number is right, everyone gets four. After the staff member takes the eggs, they place them in a large pot, where they're cooked using the steam from the hot spring. It takes about 20 minutes, but since the pot is full, it takes longer. If you have fewer eggs, it won't take as long. After 20 minutes, the eggs are ready. I quickly opened them and ate them. Sure enough, they were cooked, and they were perfectly cooked. The difference between hot spring eggs and regular eggs is that the hot springs don't reach 100 degrees Celsius, so the yolk is oily and not fully cooked, and the white isn't completely set. That's what makes them authentic hot spring eggs. I felt like I'd cooked them too long. They were completely cooked, and they tasted just like regular eggs, which is a negative review.

By Alone with the wind |

The Big Boiling Pot is the highest and last attraction in Tengchong Rehai Scenic Area. It seems that all the tourists in the entire scenic area are concentrated here. It is not easy to take a photo here, especially when I am alone. Most of the photos become "group photos".

There are many egg vendors around the big boiling pot. Although you can't throw eggs into the clear boiling pot to cook, the steam coming out from the grates next to it is very hot! Many tourists put their eggs on it, just like grilling lamb skewers, and they are indeed cooked quickly and can be eaten on the spot.

It was very convenient to drive there. The signs were very clear. We started from the foot of the mountain. As soon as we entered, we were surrounded by smoke. It was like a fairyland. We looked at each spring in detail. Some were similar in spirit and some in shape. The exquisiteness of the smoke was really beautiful. The toilets provided paper towels, which was very considerate. The clean floors and environment made us more comfortable. We bought eggs at the door and carried them all the way to the top of the mountain in a big boiling pot. We worked hard. We boiled them for 15 minutes. They were a bit runny and tasted okay. We bought 4 and ate 2. It was also very comfortable to wash hands with warm spring water. We took a tour bus when we went down, which saved us a lot of trouble.

Rehai Scenic Area is located in the south of Tengchong City, while the remaining volcanoes, wetlands, Ginkgo Village, Sakura Valley, etc. are all located in the north of the city. If you want to take a hot spring bath, you should stay in Rehai Scenic Area for a day. If you don't want to take a hot spring bath, 2 hours is enough. At the end of the scenic area is a large boiling pot, where you can steam eggs by yourself. The water in the large boiling pot is clear blue, it is so clean.

One of Yunnan's 18 strange things is that eggs are sold in a bun. You must try it. Eggs are 10 yuan a bunch, and they are sold at the park entrance for 5 yuan, which is twice as cheap. Mark your bun before putting it in, as it is easy for many people to make mistakes. Steam for 15 minutes. If someone frequently lifts the lid, steam it for a little longer.

Real geothermal hot springs, a wonder of the world, must be recommended

By Cat plush |

This scenic area is characterized by its intense heat. Formed by volcanic magma, steam rises through fissures, forming over 80 steam springs and hot springs. The water reaches temperatures exceeding 90°C. The path up the mountain is dotted with hot springs of varying sizes, such as the "Pregnant Spring" and the "Pearl Spring." Nearly every spring is marked with a "High Temperature, Do Not Approach" sign. Even the cracks in the stone steps are emitting steam. As you progress deeper into the area, the water temperature rises, eventually reaching the "hot sea boiling pot" at nearly 100°C. Despite the high temperature, the springs are crystal clear. Locals steam foods like eggs, peanuts, and purple sweet potatoes directly in the hot springs and sell them for sale. They also use the water for foot baths. The hot springs are high in sulfur and cannot be drunk directly. While the area surrounding the springs is nearly barren, the mountainside is lush and green.

By Drifting Bottle |

Located in Tengchong, it is a geothermal phenomenon with very high temperature. Locals put eggs in bamboo frames and put them in water. After a while, the eggs will be cooked.

Visit the volcanic ruins and enjoy the volcanic hot springs, the pride of Tengchong

By Amin✨ |

It was a worthwhile trip, especially during the off-season. I recommend staying at the Health Pavilion for visiting the Rehai Scenic Area. The 1,400 yuan fee includes two tickets for the scenic area, hot springs, and a visit to the Geological Museum. The butler service was so thoughtful. When I came back from the Yugu Hot Springs at night, there was a rose on my bed, the hot spring in my room was fully stocked, and a midnight snack was prepared. It would be even more romantic if it was a honeymoon trip.

We bought a family package at a B&B in Heshun Ancient Town for two adults and one child, including the Atami Scenic Area and the Atami Yugu Hot Springs. Each person received a bowl of rice noodle soup cooked in a large pot. The price was 580 yuan, which wasn't bad. I checked the prices on China-TravelNote, Qunar, Tongcheng, and Taobao, and it was over 500 yuan for two people. The owner said this family package was a new promotion, and he made several phone calls to confirm it for me. He was really helpful. Buy a few eggs at the entrance to the scenic area so you can steam them in Atami. Be sure to buy a few; we only bought a bunch of four, which wasn't enough. The eggs steamed in the large pot are especially delicious. There's also a shop selling eggs next to the large pot, but they're much more expensive than outside.

It is convenient to buy eggs from outside and boil them

By SEASON |

The Hot Spring Big Boiling Pot is the landmark of the Hot Spring Scenic Area. It is located on the top of the mountain in the Hot Spring Scenic Area. In fact, it is quite a long way to go. As a girl from Zhejiang, I went up with a group of friends and took several breaks. There is a snack bar-like place halfway up the mountain where you can buy local specialties, take a break and eat. Then walk up a flight of stairs to the big boiling pot. There are many local grandmothers at the entrance of the scenic area selling eggs tied with straw. They are five yuan a bunch. At the top of the mountain, there are boiled eggs for ten yuan a bunch, all five a bunch. It is one of the eighteen wonders in Yunnan. Personally, I think there is no need to carry eggs to the top of the mountain with great difficulty. You have to queue up to get a number to boil eggs on the top of the mountain. It is very troublesome, and it will not be cooked for a while. You don’t have to boil them yourself. The staff will boil them uniformly. It is better to buy ready-made eggs directly on the top of the mountain. There are also potatoes, quail eggs, sweet potatoes, etc. for sale. The prices are not expensive. It is recommended to walk up, the scenery along the way is pretty good, and then take a tour bus down, which costs 10 yuan per trip. If you take a round trip, it is 15 yuan. In that case, you can't play many attractions. It is recommended to take a tour bus. The student ticket for Atami should be 30 yuan, which is a bit expensive, after all, it is only a 4A scenic spot.
