Blackfish River

黑鱼河

The Blackfish River was formed when lava flows blocked underground water veins, bringing them to the surface. The Heiyu River's giant springs are crystal clear year-round, with an undiminished flow. Two distinct streams flow from the river: one gushes joyfully into the Longchuan River, while the other, like a young girl, emerges as a gentle spring. These two springs merge into the Longchuan River, creating a unique spectacle during summer floods, creating distinctly different waters.

The road is remote, so I followed the navigation system closely. Traffic was minimal, and I was constantly worried about taking the wrong road. Along the way, I could admire the views of Gaoligong Mountain and the volcanoes of varying sizes below. Parking is limited to a small dam, but fortunately, it's not crowded. The fee is 10 yuan. The scenic area is extremely simple, with no gate and no entrance fee. Just walk through the village houses and you'll find yourself there before you know it. The Heiyu River is located in the Heiyu River Gorge of Tengchong County Volcano Park, adjacent to the volcanic columnar joints. The Heiyu River is an underground river formed after the Tengchong volcano erupted, when lava flows blocked the underground river, forcing groundwater to flow to the surface. The Heiyu River's giant spring has a flow rate of 1,400 cubic meters per second. The Heiyu River is Tengchong's largest low-temperature hot spring, boasting crystal clear water year-round. Not only does the flow remain constant, but each stream has its own unique characteristics. The river water is naturally high-quality mineral water. The villagers in the scenic area are quite business-savvy. Wild monkeys from the mountains scurried up and down the roadside, and vendors sold fruit and fed them, much to the delight of the children. Every household had a large basin of snakehead fish, cooked to order. The option of releasing the fish for 10 yuan for three fish was a real treat for the little ones. The fish were extremely slippery and difficult to grasp, and they simply slid to the ground. The landlady provided a colander, which allowed for a smooth release. The source of the Black Fish River is an underground river in the cave ahead, which you can get closer to. A simple bamboo bridge, with a small basin placed on a stool nearby, occupies the path. The toll is 1 yuan per person, but there's no one guarding the bridge, so it's all up to you.

The Black Fish River is located in Tengchong, Baoshan, Yunnan, over ten kilometers from downtown Tengchong. Walking along a rocky path through the mountains and forests, you'll find fresh air and the refreshing sound of the clear mountain water flowing beneath your feet. Along the way, locals are selling fish, said to be from the river itself. The Black Fish River was formed when lava flows blocked groundwater, bringing it to the surface. The Black Fish River springs with a large flow, and its outlet branches into two branches. The river gets its name from the thousands of small black fish that flow out of it every summer and autumn. Along the way, you'll find many vendors selling grilled fish, so if you're craving some, give it a try.

If we hadn't chartered a car, we probably wouldn't have visited the Black Fish River. It's not well-known, and there aren't many things to see. There are stalls all along the river, and the only fun part is feeding the monkeys at the end. The driver told us that someone would call the monkeys down from the mountain. At first, I thought it was some secret code. But then the woman said, "Monkey~~~!" My friend and I burst out laughing! And we even needed a woman to call for us?! Those crazy monkeys ate over 50 yuan of our money. Since we were early, we were the first to be fed, so they were all hungry.

Stalls lined the riverside, selling local specialties like peach gum, soap rice, dendrobium officinale, and roses. Of course, there were also some barbecued game, including grilled snakehead fish, wild birds, wild vegetable and flower cakes, pine flower cakes, and wild mushrooms. We only tried a few vegetarian options, and the most popular dish was the roasted potatoes...

Upon entering the scenic area, there's only a narrow path lined with small stalls, but few tourists. After walking for a while, I stumbled upon a unique shop—selling monkey feed! I leaned over to peer through the crowd and, sure enough, I saw monkeys clinging to the trees. The Blackfish River spring water is clear and cold, serving as a natural ice machine and laundry pond. Almost all shops keep their drinks cool by the river. After walking for about ten minutes, I reached a three-way intersection: one leading to the Blackfish River's source, the other to the Columnar Joint Scenic Area (approximately 15 km).

We took a taxi to Heiyu River. The driver asked repeatedly along the way if he wanted to wait for us there and take us to the columnar joint. But we didn't know how long the journey would take, so we declined. This is a lesson learned the hard way: if you don't hire a taxi, you must flag down the driver and ask him to wait. Otherwise, you won't be able to get a taxi and will have to walk a long way to get to the main road.

From the parking lot of the Black Fish River scenic area, you need to walk a distance to the source of the river and the exit of the underground river. There are many simple farmhouses and small stalls of local people on the way, selling all kinds of wild game.

We soon reached the Blackfish River, closer to its source. There was a very calm and open expanse of water. The color of the water was similar to that of Jiuzhaigou, but the area was obviously much smaller.

The Blackfish River has a large amount of water and the water quality is super clear. To get to the source, you must cross this small bridge. Of course, the water here is not too deep, but it is indeed very fast.

Continuing to walk towards the source, the water plants in the water are lush and green, looking vibrant and beautiful in the sunlight. The river water is natural high-quality mineral water. The river water flows into the Longchuan River, and when it meets the river water, it forms two distinct colors of clear and turbid water, which is quite interesting to watch.

The source of the water splits into two streams and flows out of the cave. The vegetation here is also very dense. We also walked to the water's edge to wash our hands. It was quite cold.

The Black Fish River is an underground river. It's named after the small black fish that often flow out of its outlet in summer and autumn. The Black Fish River is Tengchong's largest low-temperature spring and produces high-quality natural mineral water.

This place was not in our original plan, and even Teacher Song was here for the first time. When we got to the ticket office, we found that the ticket we had bought yesterday for climbing the volcano was actually valid. God is really fair. Yesterday we saw a big pit, and today we were rewarded with an exquisite, beautiful and quiet place!

The Black Fish River was formed when volcanic lava blocked the river channel after the Tengchong volcanic activity, forcing the water to flow to the surface, forming waterfalls, ponds, and a river. Thanks to the nutrient-rich surface and lush vegetation, the water is pure and clear, with emerald green algae. The light and shadow create a sense of entering a fantastical world of glass...

Accidentally broke into a secret realm of glass jade!

The Blackfish River was formed when lava flow blocked underground water veins and exposed them to the surface.

By Playing around |

I went there with a tour group, but I didn't understand what the attraction of this attraction was. It was just to see the clear river water?

By Han Fei Home |

The Blackfish River flows downstream under the columnar joints, passing by in a flash.

By Yanyanyanyanxi |

I bought a ticket for the volcano and drove 14km to see this crap! There is a small river with some snack shops along the way. It takes 30 minutes to walk back and forth. There is an observation deck on the side of the road where you can take a look at the columnar joints. I personally don't recommend it!

By dawnleave |

I originally thought it was just a gift from the Volcano Park and didn't have high expectations, but after passing the shabby entrance and commercial stalls, the scenery was great and the green plants in the underground river were very distinctive.

By Travel and Photography Without Boundaries |

The water flowing out of the underground river roars and rushes. The black fish in it tastes average, but the group of macaques there are quite cute.

By Jane |

The Blackfish River is not black at all! The water is the color of emerald green, with a very warm luster.

It's incredibly clear! So clear you can't even see the water! I scooped up some water and tasted it; it was cool and sweet, way better than ****! It's a little sweet!

By Anita |

The entrance to the scenic area is shabby, but you have to walk to the end to find a super surprising attraction. The water is crystal clear and the aquatic plants are lush. It is not tiring to walk in. I don’t know why so many people missed this place.

By Winnie_yun |

Only after passing through the jungle trail can you see the river flowing by. The river water looks black because it is not the flood season and the river is a bit dry.

By Misaki |

The Heiyu River's giant spring, with a flow rate of 1,400 cubic meters per second, is Tengchong's largest low-temperature hot spring and a natural source of high-quality mineral water. In fact, it's not just cold; it's icy cold. Local vendors use the spring as a natural refrigerator, placing drinks in baskets and refrigerating them in the water. They also use the water to cool fruit.

On the way back, we met several tourists who asked us what other scenery lay ahead and whether it was nice. It seemed many people's curiosity had been extinguished simply by walking from the scenic area entrance to the dim Longchuan River. A little further ahead offered a different view. To paraphrase an old tourist saying, "Since you're here, you're here."

By Scenery along the way |

Legend has it that before May, thousands of snakehead fish emerge from the cave at the source. We swam upstream, following the source. As we walked, the scenery became increasingly beautiful. Waterweed floated in the crystal-clear water. Halfway up, a waterfall appeared. The backflow was turbulent.

By June Lotus |

After viewing the columnar joint landscape, we walked to the Blackfish River. The river water was crystal clear and there were many small restaurants around where you could eat the small black fish in the river.

By Pan D |

Although this scenic area is officially included in the volcano ticket package, its underdeveloped construction gives it a decidedly shoddy feel. The entrance is off a two-lane mountain road, with parking for only a few cars. There's no gate, just a shabby security booth where a uniformed staff member checks tickets. Small restaurants abound at the entrance, with large basins filled with the local specialty, snakehead fish, displayed at the entrance. Snakehead fish is 25 yuan per jin (approximately 100 grams), while grilled snakehead fish at stalls sells large ones for 20 yuan each and small ones for 5 yuan each. The scenery along the trail isn't particularly scenic, but there are plenty of affordable snacks along the way. There's a kind of egg fruit soaked in water. The woman offered six for 10 yuan, but I bargained for seven for 10 yuan. She praised my bargaining skills while she loaded the fruit for me. The skin was bitter, and the flesh was sour and slightly astringent. I ended up not finishing all seven. There's also salt-roasted ginkgo nuts in a small pot for 10 yuan each. They're delicious, but the buds in the center haven't been removed, so I have to pick them out as I eat them, otherwise they're incredibly bitter.

We passed by several clear pools of water, which looked like a natural rural river scene. In fact, they were just the water flowing out of the underground river. The scenery was slightly better, but it felt a bit far from being a successful tourist attraction.

By -My Own Commoner- |

If you've bought a volcano ticket, you don't need this. It's nice to just walk around. I recommend trying the egg fruit and jujube. If you want to see the columnar joints, I recommend viewing them on the mountain itself; walking inside is too strenuous and uninteresting.

A roadside sign introduces the Black Fish River, explaining that this underground river was formed after the Tengchong volcanic activity, when lava flows blocked the underground river, allowing groundwater to flow to the surface. The name "Black Fish River" comes from the small black fish that often flow out of the outlet in summer and autumn. The Black Fish River is Tengchong's largest low-temperature spring, and its water itself is naturally high-quality mineral water. Riverside vendors sell snacks made with black fish, which you can try if you're interested.

By Cypress trees in front of the courtyard |

It is very beautiful. People on the Internet say that this place is just average, but I think it is more beautiful than the Atami Scenic Area and the Volcano Scenic Area. Water plants are the characteristics of this place. You can also feed monkeys. They are said to be wild, but there are many tourists and the monkeys are well fed. It is worth coming. Remember that if you go to the Volcano Park, you don’t need to buy tickets here. Don’t miss this place when you go to the Volcano Park.

By Insects |

The Volcano National Park and Blackfish River are combined with a ticket, meaning that a ticket to the Volcano National Park includes direct access to the Blackfish River. However, there's no transportation provided, so you'll have to share a ride. The Blackfish River is a stream that gushes out of an underground cave. It's so cold that businesses use the river water in refrigerators to chill drinks.

By Alone with the wind |

The Heiyu River scenic area isn't large, and you can stroll through it in an hour. However, my favorite thing to do is photograph the blue sky, white clouds, and flowing waterfalls, which is why I always carry a tripod with me when I travel. So I set it up inside and kept photographing the water. Even elderly people with limited mobility would come back from their strolls to wait for me.

In the small Heiyu River scenic area, monkeys play and jump around pedestrians, begging for food. Local vendors sell bananas to feed the monkeys, a surefire way to make money.

By 崁崁 |

We had a package deal with the volcano, so we drove here. It was a 30-minute journey. January was really the off-season, so there were very few people and the ticket price was just enough. There were small stalls along the way selling barbecue and medicinal herbs. The downside of traveling with my parents is that they always have to ask about the price and the effect. I shrugged helplessly, passing by countless small stalls and salesmen, and finally saw a very beautiful view. There was water in the middle with duckweed and aquatic plants blending together. I felt relieved. It was interesting with the small stalls around. There was a small stone bridge along the way, which was quite thrilling. At the end, you can see the water source. I bought roasted goose eggs and dried tofu, which have a unique flavor. My father also bought local eggs, dendrobium officinale, and large wild roses. When we were ready to go back, we met a fat orange cat that followed us all the way and wanted to eat black fish. It felt good, but I was a little disappointed that I didn't see any monkeys.

By Zhang Xiaomao |

The water is so clear that you can see the bottom. People say that if the water is too clear, there will be no fish. However, there are many snakehead fish here. The fried snakehead fish sold on the roadside come from this river.

By Wang Xiaoxiao |

The Blackfish River is adjacent to the columnar joints, only about 1 km away.

Following the Longchuan River downstream, you'll reach the Heiyu River. The scenery along the way is beautiful and perfect for a hike. The Heiyu River is another geological wonder of the Tengchong volcanic cluster. It's an underground river that disappears just as it emerges. It has two outlets not far from each other, forming two distinct streams. Each flows for less than a hundred meters before merging into the Longchuan River.

By Slowly |

The Blackfish River was a pleasant surprise. While not a spectacular sight, it was relaxing. The water was crystal clear, the air fresh, and monkeys could be spotted further into the scenic area. Along the river, local stalls offered a wide variety of affordable fruits and snacks. While admission to the Volcano National Park is included, it's quite far from the park, making transportation difficult. It seems the only option is to charter a car or drive yourself. Perhaps because of this, the area was sparsely populated, with no sight of tour groups.

By Extreme Wandering-Xiao Yang |

The Blackfish River, a beautiful river, a marvelous river, an intoxicating river, a river that is both real and illusory, captivating. A sip of its sweetness, a glance of its soothing beauty.

By inging |

There are only a few attractions in Tengchong. This one is connected to the volcano park ticket. The chartered car driver was very good and helped us save a few tickets.

By Isis |

A very, very clear underground cold spring formed a dark river, and there were wild monkeys. In the quiet forest, the gurgling water was a stealth of leisure for half a day.

By love_cestlavie |

The Blackfish River gets its name from its abundance of snakehead fish, but when we visited, we could only see the clear water, no fish in sight. There were many grilled fish stalls along the riverbank, but we were there early, so they weren't open yet. The air here is fresh and high in negative oxygen ions. Walking further along the Blackfish River, you'll reach columnar joints.

By "Miss Music" |

The further you go in, the more beautiful it becomes. It is much better than the wetland park and exceeded my expectations. The only problem is that the specialties such as grilled black fish sold along the way are not very hygienic.

By Enjoy Travel |

The volcanic columnar joints are adjacent to the Blackfish River, which is one kilometer away.

Everyone says Blackfish River is boring, but I think it's quite fun. There are a lot of monkeys, which is much more fun than the zoo.

By Four |

The water in the Blackfish River is very clear and cool. Vendors sell drinks in the river to keep them cool.

By Rookie King |

There are no snakehead fish in the Snakehead River. Maybe they are hiding.

By Walking child |

It's a very natural scenic spot with beautiful scenery. You can also see little monkeys in the mountains.

By Soul of Night |

If you have already bought the 40 yuan ticket for the Volcano Park, the ticket here is included. During the Spring Festival, the ticket is 20% off, 32 yuan. In addition to the Black Fish River, the scenic area actually leads to the columnar joints. Every roadside stall in the scenic area sells black fish from the river. The meat is smooth and chewy. There are so many of them. They should not be protected animals.

By mints |

It belongs to the geographical landscape, underground dark river. Apart from the geographical value, the landscape feels average. Although it is a scenic spot with the Volcano Park, the actual distance is very far, it seems to be more than ten kilometers. Because I chartered a car, I went there by the way.

The Heiyu River is an underground river formed after the Tengchong volcanic eruption, when lava flows blocked the underground river, forcing groundwater to flow to the surface. I originally thought it was just an ordinary underground river, but I didn’t expect the water flow to be so large, which surprised me a little.

The spring water was cool, and people put boxes of drinks in the river, as well as barbecued small fish.

By wuliaojiefang |

Yes, the crystal clear river water made me reluctant to leave, it was really too clear. It is worth a visit.

By Lao Zhang |

The scenery is average, but the grilled fish is delicious. I ordered a bottle of Dali beer.

By Beautiful woman tasting tea |

It got its name from the sighting of black fish in the water, but the water is ordinary and there are no fish. You can see monkeys, but there are too many vendors along the way.

By Car Leak_ZHANG |

The water is quite clear, and the nearby mountain paths are quite pleasant to walk on, all paved with volcanic stones. The visible part of the river is very short, and you can't see it for long before it flows into the particularly yellow river outside...

Since it is included in the volcano ticket, it is worth seeing. However, you need to find a separate car to go from the volcano.

It is recommended to charter a car directly, and then you can go to the wetland after visiting here.

By Shadow follows |

Another scenic spot worth admiring in the Volcano Group Park is the Black Fish River, whose water color is somewhat similar to that of Jiuzhaigou. The streams that flow into it flow so gracefully and softly.

In the fields on the river bank where spring plowing has not yet begun, the buffaloes are so leisurely and comfortable.

By Cat who only drinks Coke |

The water of the beautiful Blackfish River is so clear that you can see every tiny water plant flowing underground. The only difference is that the water boxes along the Yanbian River are all used by businesses to keep cold soda.

By Simple |

I still can't quite believe this is the Blackfish River, as it's just a small pond with no path ahead... The water is clear, and the water plants are swaying beautifully. Back at the entrance, they sell grilled blackfish, which tastes delicious.

By Victory |

The road to the Blackfish River was longer than expected. The river itself is quite unique. It had just rained, and while other rivers were yellow, the water here was crystal clear. The vendors kept their drinks chilled in the spring water.

The Black Fish River is an underground river, named after the small black fish that often flow out of its outlet in summer and autumn. It is Tengchong's largest low-lying hot spring, and the river water is high-quality natural mineral water.

It is the rainy season now, and the surrounding river water is turbid and yellow.

By Yu Xinfly |

The scenery of Heiyu River is ordinary. It's Tengchong's largest low-temperature hot spring, crystal clear year-round. Not only does the flow remain constant, but each stream has its own unique characteristics. I came here just to see the water; it's crystal clear, I've never seen water so transparent before. The water plants and fish are clearly visible. Nearby villagers set up stalls selling snakehead fish and other local specialties. The snakehead fish must have looked delicious, but unfortunately I didn't have time to try it.

There's a toll booth at the entrance to Heiyu River, but it was empty. I wonder if they charge a fee on a regular basis. Grilled fish are sold along the roadside, ranging in price from 15 to 20 yuan and up, depending on the size of the fish. If you're interested, give it a try. This attraction was formed by an underground river emerging from the surface. I personally prefer the columnar joints.

It's a magical and tranquil place. There are lots of wild monkeys there. Buy some bananas or green dates when you enter to feed them. Then, walk upstream along the river. It's a short walk, and after about 20 minutes, you'll reach the end. The water is incredibly clear. On the way out, grill two snakehead fish, but ask for them to be freshly killed and grilled. They're delicious.

By Ding Ding |

Blackfish River, a giant low-temperature underground spring, got its name from the small black fish that flow out of it. The spring is indeed large, but the scenery in these few photos is the only thing to see, there is nothing else to see.

By Wenwen |

Heiyu River, Tengchong's largest low-temperature hot spring, boasts crystal-clear water year-round, undiminished flow, and each stream possesses its own distinct characteristics. The river's water is naturally high-quality mineral water. Nestled in a beautiful, fresh mountain valley, the river flows gently, fed by crystal-clear hot spring water. Nestled between the mountains and the water, the scenery is breathtaking, and the winding path winding through the narrow mountain passes creates a sense of secluded tranquility. The tranquil environment and fresh air create a sense of transcendence, bringing a profound sense of well-being.

There are many little monkeys in the Black Fish River. We first bought bananas worth 30 yuan there as food for the little monkeys. The monkeys there are not afraid of people at all. They will take the food from your hands to feed them. Many big and small monkeys come to grab the food. They eat happily and we feed them happily. This is also a place worth having fun.

By A Luo and the Raging Flow |

The Black Fish River flows through the mountains. Following its course, listening to the gurgling water, I felt a sudden sense of calm. Less than half an hour later, I reached the end point. The clear waters were teeming with green aquatic plants, swaying and spreading in a patchwork pattern along the current. "Green waterweeds on the soft mud sway luxuriantly beneath the water." The name "Woman River" truly lives up to its reputation. Further along, the roaring waters of the Man River are a perfect fusion of nature's creation and human imagination.

By YH |

They say "clear waters mean no fish." The waters of the Blackfish River are truly crystal clear! The fish are also delicious! This shallow beach is the most beautiful part of the entire Blackfish River! Walking through the clear water and looking at the lush green water plants at the bottom is truly a feast for the eyes.

We arrived at the Black Fish River and had some grilled black fish. The scenery was just average and there was no need to come here. It is said that the events described in "Jade Guanyin" happened nearby.

By lyccc |

I'd read about it online and my driver recommended it, but my personal experience proved it was a rip-off. Unless you buy the package for the crater and Blackfish River, it's worth the several dozen yuan per person. I don't know if it's because the area hasn't been fully developed yet, or if there aren't many attractions, but once you get there, it feels run-down and shabby. There's only one narrow road leading up a distant mountain, and I have no idea where it leads. There's a small river next to it, probably the Blackfish River, but I didn't see any snakehead fish. The water is clear, and there are monkeys you can feed.

When we arrived at the Blackfish River, no one checked the entrance fee. However, this place is very small and there should be no entrance fee.

A family of three walked leisurely in the Heiyu River. There were very few tourists, and they would occasionally run into a few of them. It felt a bit like Journey to the West, hehe.

You can go or not, it depends on your means of transportation.

The volcano, columnar rocks and Blackfish River are all quite far apart. It's okay if you charter a car, but if you walk, I suggest you be careful.

Under the blazing sun, the sight of a cool, refreshing river is refreshing. The water flows underground, warm in winter and cool in summer. The water is excellent, and the area is rich in fish, with small snakehead fish being the most abundant, hence the name Blackfish River.

The Heiyu River Scenic Area does not have any special landscapes, but there are many small shops selling local specialties, many places selling barbecue and fruits, and a small stream with clear water that can be seen to the bottom.

Walk along the mountain road, eat small black fish and roasted grasshoppers (I didn’t dare to eat them), watch the macaques, wash your face with clear spring water, and all the dust along the way will disappear.

Perhaps due to the lack of tourists, we didn't see any hot air balloons or hang gliders. Fortunately, I met two fellow Xi'an natives during the tour. They had chartered a car, so I was lucky enough to get a ride. The volcano park in the Heiyu River Scenic Area is about 12 kilometers away, and the hike would be quite time-consuming without a car. The water in the Heiyu River Scenic Area has a bit of the flavor of Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, but the flow is not very high.
