The source of the Black Fish River is an underground river in the cave ahead, which you can get closer to. A simple bamboo bridge, with a small basin placed on a stool nearby, occupies the path. The toll is 1 yuan per person, but there's no one guarding the bridge, so it's all up to you.

But we didn't know how long the journey would take, so we declined. This is a lesson learned the hard way: if you don't hire a taxi, you must flag down the driver and ask him to wait. Otherwise, you won't be able to get a taxi and will have to walk a long way to get to the main road.

From the parking lot of the Black Fish River scenic area, you need to walk a distance to the source of the river and the exit of the underground river. There are many simple farmhouses and small stalls of local people on the way, selling all kinds of wild game.

We soon reached the Blackfish River, closer to its source. There was a very calm and open expanse of water. The color of the water was similar to that of Jiuzhaigou, but the area was obviously much smaller.

The scenery along the trail isn't particularly scenic, but there are plenty of affordable snacks along the way. There's a kind of egg fruit soaked in water. The woman offered six for 10 yuan, but I bargained for seven for 10 yuan. She praised my bargaining skills while she loaded the fruit for me. The skin was bitter, and the flesh was sour and slightly astringent. I ended up not finishing all seven. There's also salt-roasted ginkgo nuts in a small pot for 10 yuan each. They're delicious, but the buds in the center haven't been removed, so I have to pick them out as I eat them, otherwise they're incredibly bitter.



We passed by several clear pools of water, which looked like a natural rural river scene. In fact, they were just the water flowing out of the underground river. The scenery was slightly better, but it felt a bit far from being a successful tourist attraction.

If you've bought a volcano ticket, you don't need this. It's nice to just walk around. I recommend trying the egg fruit and jujube. If you want to see the columnar joints, I recommend viewing them on the mountain itself; walking inside is too strenuous and uninteresting.

I bought roasted goose eggs and dried tofu, which have a unique flavor. My father also bought local eggs, dendrobium officinale, and large wild roses. When we were ready to go back, we met a fat orange cat that followed us all the way and wanted to eat black fish. It felt good, but I was a little disappointed that I didn't see any monkeys.

The water in the Heiyu River Scenic Area has a bit of the flavor of Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, but the flow is not very high.
