Introducing Fengyili

Fengyili (Fang Bao's former residence) is located between Sixiang and Xinxiang on Longmian East Road in Tongcheng District. Fang Bao, who lived in Jiangning ( now Nanjing City ) , often lived here when he returned to his hometown to take exams, worship his ancestors, visit relatives and friends.

Fang Bao ( 1668-1749 ), also known by his courtesy name Fengjiu, Linggao, and pseudonym Wangxi, was a renowned Qing Dynasty writer and the founder of the Tongcheng School of Literature. Prodigious from childhood, he could recite the sutras by the age of six. At the age of twenty-four, he was hailed in Kyoto as " the best in Jiangdong " and " the comeback of Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu . "

He was imprisoned in connection with the case of Dai Mingshi's Nanshan Collection, but was later pardoned. During the Qianlong reign, he was appointed Minister of Rites. He served as Vice President of Huang Qing Wen Ying and San Li Yi Shu, and President of the Jingshiguan . He retired to his hometown at the age of 75.

Fang Bao combined the orthodox doctrine of Dao with the orthodox tradition of literature in his scholarship and writing, pioneering the theory of " righteousness and law , " which laid the foundation for the Tongcheng School's prose theory. His works are rigorous, elegant, plain and natural, and his works have been passed down through the ages under the collective title "The Complete Works of Fang Wangxi."
