Arashiyama, a natural tourist destination in the western suburbs of Kyoto, encompasses the area along the Katsura River, which flows through western Kyoto. Famous for its cherry blossoms in spring and crimson maples in autumn, the scenic Sagano bamboo forest also exudes Kyoto's unique charm.
Since the ancient Heian Period ( 794-1185 ), this area has been a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves, and its beautiful scenery has been praised in poems by numerous scholars. Furthermore, after cherry blossoms from Yoshino, Nara Prefecture, were transplanted here, this area has also become a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.
The entire Arashiyama area is centered around the Togetsukyo Bridge, which spans the Katsura River. The bridge's name originates from a line in a poem by Emperor Kameyama that reads, " It's like a full moon passing over the bridge ." Although it appears to be a wooden bridge, today's Togetsukyo Bridge is actually a modern reinforced concrete structure that can accommodate cars, though it features retro wooden railings to complement the surrounding scenery.
In addition to its natural beauty, the Arashiyama area is home to many renowned temples and shrines, including the burial place of several ancient Japanese emperors. Therefore, visiting these temples and shrines is a major tourist attraction. Among these temples and shrines, the most prominent is Tenryu-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site. Other notable historical sites include Nonomiya Shrine, featured in the literary masterpiece The Tale of Genji, and Seiryo-ji Temple, home to a National Treasure Buddhist statue.
Cherry Blossom Season : Late March to late April , the cherry blossoms from Togetsukyo Bridge to Arashiyama Nakanoshima Park, the Oi River embankment, and Kameyama Park behind Tenryu-ji Temple are in full bloom, creating a dazzling spectacle that has become one of Kyoto's most famous attractions. Along the banks of the Katsura River, 50 -year-old trees form a long cherry blossom tunnel, offering a relaxing stroll.
Maple blossom viewing season : Starting from late November every year , the trees and temples in the mountains are brightly colored, and the red color covers the entire mountain from the top of the mountain to the river valley. Your heart will be filled with the rich and intoxicating autumn colors.
