The Zhanqi Scenic Area is located one li east of the Shexian County exit of the Hangzhou-Anhui Expressway and three li from the Xin'an River, Huizhou's mother river . The name Zhanqi Village derives from a line from the " Book of Songs : Wei Feng ": " Looking over the bank of the Qi River, green bamboos lushly stand. A gentleman is as sharp as a knife, as polished as a stone."

Zhanqi Village boasts 102 well-preserved ancient houses , 42 of which feature exquisite gatehouses and intricate wood carvings. These brick carvings, often featuring landscapes, mythology, and folk customs, express the spiritual world and life attitudes of their owners.

Many people from Zhanqi became officials, while countless others found success in business and returned home to build houses. This made Zhanqi a hub for Huizhou gentry. The village boasts a thriving waterway, providing both daily necessities and firefighting water, a unique example of ingenuity. The Qishui River (also known as the Nanyuan River ) in front of the village was artificially excavated in a zigzag shape, flowing east to west, symbolizing the retention of wealth. This water flows from east to west, passing through Nanyuankou and Wangjiaqi to join the Xin'an River, Huizhou's mother river.
