Introducing Xiamen Underwater World

Xiamen Underwater World boasts over 350 species of freshwater and marine fish from every continent and ocean. Located at Huangjiadu on the east coast of Gulangyu Island, it was formerly Gulangyu Park and is adjacent to the ferry terminal. It was originally located west of the ferry terminal on Gulangyu Island, in the former Gulangyu Park.

This aquamarine crystal palace, nestled among flower beds, housed an aquarium, penguin pavilions, and freshwater fish pavilions in its first phase. At the entrance, 60 meters from the main building, stands a unique and striking octopus sculpture, 6 meters tall and 11.2 meters across. It is the landmark of Xiamen Underwater World and a popular photo spot for visitors.

Xiamen Underwater World boasts modern facilities and amenities, but its most striking feature is the underwater tunnel. The tunnel is 80 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. Once inside, standing on the electric walkway, visitors can admire the large, concave fish ponds on either side. This allows visitors to "enter the underwater world" and swim with the fish without diving. Visitors can see the fish in all directions, up and down, forward and backward, and see endless schools of fish brushing past them. Fierce sharks, baring their sharp teeth, pounce upon you, while giant, slow-moving fish drift freely overhead.

Aquarium

Mainly unique tropical and subtropical fish, they come from oceans all over the world. There are 20 fish ponds of various sizes with a total water volume of about 4,000 tons. The main body of the fish are marine life, including giant sharks, giant fish workers, giant groupers, coral reef fish, giant humphead wrasse, doctor fish, pipefish, sea dragons, seahorses, piranhas, Australian lobsters, outstanding representatives of echinoderms - starfish, octopus, stonefish, pufferfish and lionfish, sea turtles, etc.

Penguin and Freshwater Fish House

Xiamen Underwater World is home to two species of penguins: the Humboldt's penguin and the Spot-billed penguin, both native to Peru. Penguins are flightless birds due to vestigial wings, but they are adept swimmers, feeding on Antarctic krill, squid, and small fish. They live in large groups, with gatherings ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand, and sometimes as large as 100,000 to 200,000. The penguin enclosure at Xiamen Underwater World is the first of its kind in China.

Sperm Whale Museum

On March 11, 2000, a sperm whale, the largest sperm whale ever found in China, died in Xiamen waters. Xiamen Underwater World, in accordance with national regulations and procedures, received the whale and prepared two specimens, one skin and one skeleton.
