Introducing Fanpolou

Fanpolou was built by Xu Jingquan, a Filipino overseas Chinese from Jinjiang, Fujian, in 1927. Its vibrant colors and unique design combine some Rococo elements with traditional Chinese craftsmanship in a harmonious and ingenious way, a rare sight among the villas on Gulangyu Island. It remains as elegant and graceful as ever, and has been frequently chosen by film directors for filming of films such as "Liao Zhongkai," "Autumn in Spring," and "Tulou Family."

Enter through a small gate beside the tall gatehouse; the main entrance is usually closed. Along the high rockery wall, ascending the steps, you reach a spacious courtyard. The tall gatehouse, crowned by two canaries holding copper coins, features two iron gates, one with the Chinese character "Fu" (blessing) inscribed on the front and the other with the back. Inside, you'll see the rockery walls, the mirrored holes, lattice windows, and the screens of poetry, the small stage, the orchestra pit, the passageways, and the reliefs beneath the eaves and lintels, including figures of beauty, golden monkeys offering peaches, classical figures, and auspicious symbols. However, Fanpolou has changed hands several times, and its current dilapidated state is a cause for regret.
