Introducing Science and Art Center

The Xiamen University Science and Art Center project consists of four floors, three above ground and one underground, covering nearly 19,000 square meters. With a total investment of approximately RMB 80 million, the project is scheduled for completion in August 2007. The center features a 915-seat lecture hall that also serves as a digital cinema, a 508-seat concert hall, and a 2,000-square-meter exhibition hall. Construction of the project has already entered its operational phase.

Xiamen University has always hoped to build a large or medium-sized academic lecture venue and cultural and art exhibition center to meet the school's needs for internationalization and high-level education. After careful investigation, the school decided to build the "Xiamen University Science and Art Center" on the land of the former Boxue Second Teaching Building on the south bank of Furong Lake.

The center is named "Hanming Building" to permanently commemorate the Hanming Education and Science Foundation's generous donations to support education. In April 2006, during an alumni event celebrating Xiamen University's 85th anniversary, the foundation's founder, Xiao Enming, a graduate of the 1986 International Trade Department, learned of his alma mater's plan to build a science and arts center. He generously donated 30 million RMB to fund its construction. He hoped to give back to his alma mater by providing a platform for showcasing its scientific and artistic achievements. He also hoped to encourage more Xiamen University alumni to carry forward the Tan Kah Kee spirit, remember the university motto of "Strive for Self-Improvement and Strive for Perfection," and make greater contributions to the nation, society, and the university.
