Introducing Gulang Stone

Gulangyu Island is a coastal reef that is said to have given the island its name. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Gulangyu was known as "Yuanshazhou" or "Yuanzhouzi" due to its oval shape and surrounding sandy beaches. Back then, the island was covered in boulders and lush green grass, yet uninhabited and rather desolate. Fishing trips to Yuanshazhou, where winds would hit, led fishermen to seek shelter. Over time, the number of fishermen seeking shelter grew, and the "Licuao" settlement formed, now known as the "Neicuoao" neighborhood. In Xiamen dialect, "Li" and "Nei" are homophones, so Neicuoao evolved from "Licuao."

During the Ming Dynasty, Yuanshazhou became increasingly populated, and a temple was built. People discovered a massive rock with a large cave in the center on the southwest beach. As the tides rose and fell, the waves crashed against the cave, making a resembling drumming sound. People began to call it "Gulang Stone," and Yuanshazhou was officially named "Gulang Island." In the first year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1573 AD), Ding Yizhong, the Tongzhi of Quanzhou Prefecture, inscribed the four characters "Gulang Cave Heaven" on the rock at the highest point of the island. Today, it has become a popular destination for tourists visiting Gulang Island.
