Chuncaotang was built in 1933 and is located at No. 17 Bishan Road, Gulangyu Island. It is the residence of Xu Chuncao, the first president of the Construction Union of Xiamen. It was designed by Xu Chuncao himself and built on the cliff. Its appearance is quite similar to a Western-style building, but it is actually a modern Chinese residential building.
What sets Chuncaotang apart from other villas on Gulangyu Island is its use of granite, a specialty of southern Fujian, for its foundations, columns, and porch pillars. The granite's raw surface has been intentionally preserved, with red brick grouting. At first glance, the building exudes a sense of natural ruggedness and richness, while also showcasing the vibrant colors of southern Fujian architecture. The building's unique location offers expansive views, allowing visitors to gaze out the windows at the sea and the sunset.
