Introducing Guancai Tower

Built in 1931, Guancai Tower, also known as Shubi Tower, was named Guancai Tower because of the stunning sunset views from its top floor. It has changed hands three times. Designed by a Dutch engineer (and built by Xu Chuncao Construction Company), it was later sold to Ding Yushu and finally to Chen Simin, owner of the Shanghai Guchiling Toothpaste Factory. The Chen family no longer resides here, and the villa has remained vacant.

Guancai Tower is the tallest building on Gulangyu Island. Its greatest attraction isn't the architectural design itself, but the unobstructed view from inside, where one can take in the unobstructed scenery of Gulangyu Island, the rosy clouds filling the sky, and the sea in front and behind. The views are in no way inferior to those from Sunlight Rock, thanks to its exceptional location. Because it's not as high as Sunlight Rock, the scenery is even clearer.

However, due to years of disrepair and the disappearance of the owner, visitors can no longer enter the Guancai Tower to appreciate the imagined beauty. They can only gaze at the tower through the iron gate and damaged windows and sigh.

Climate and best time to travel

Gulangyu Island has a subtropical marine monsoon climate. Guancai Tower is the tallest building on the island. Its biggest attraction is not the architectural design itself, but the fact that you can enter the tower and enjoy the unobstructed view of Gulangyu Island, the colorful clouds in the sky, and the sea in front and behind. It is a good place to travel in all seasons.
