Zhaling Lake and Eling Lake are the largest freshwater lakes in the upper Yellow River. Also known as "Chalinghai," meaning "white long lake" in Tibetan, they are located in a tectonic depression west of Maduo County on the Qinghai Plateau, west of Eling Lake. The Yellow River carries a large amount of sediment into the lakes, giving them a grayish-white appearance during rough weather, earning them the nickname "white long lake." The lakes are rich in phytoplankton and fish, making them, along with Eling Lake, a major aquaculture base in Qinghai. Three small islands lie to the west of the lakes, not far from where the Yellow River meets the lake. In summer, they attract large flocks of migratory birds, earning them the nickname "Bird Island." Subalpine meadows dominate the lakeshores, providing important pastures.
