The Holy Tomb of Islam, a burial site for sages of Islam, is located on the southern slope of Lingshan Mountain, east of Quanzhou. According to the "Book of Fujian," during the Wude period of the Tang Dynasty (618-626), four disciples of Muhammad, the founder of Islam, came to China to preach. This tomb is one of the oldest and best-preserved holy sites in the Islamic world and a designated National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit. The tomb consists of two parallel granite bases, atop which a square stone pavilion provides protection. Behind the tomb stands a stone corridor containing five stone tablets. In the center of the cemetery lies the pavilion, within which stand two rectangular granite copings. The bases of the copings are engraved with lotus petals, a simple and unadorned expression that highlights the noble character of the two sages. Behind the tomb is a crescent-shaped corridor encircling the burial chamber, said to symbolize the purity of Islam, like the new moon.
